I've been on escalators since I was a child....but it's fairly new in India. I was at the mall yesterday and while I was on the escalator, I was just wondering. I saw a few people run up (or down) the escalator and wondered why I never did that. I just stay where I am and let the escalator take me up or down. Even when there is no one, I don't walk (or run) up even when I want to. So, what about you guys? Do you try to get up or down sooner than the escalator would get you there? Or do you let the escalator take you?

Here too..and it's also seen in smaller malls. But the walking escalators are a recent addition to the malls. The previous ones were the steps.

Hey friend, escalators are very rare in Kenya so its funny to say that I have never been i one in my life. I can count the buildings in my country that have escalators and I havent gone to any of the building. I see them on tv and wonder how I would behave on it. I think i will need someone to hold so i dont fall. The first time I boarded a lift, I puked (yuck!) imagine. heheheheheeeeee, please dont laugh at me now.

Of course not...I wouldn't laugh at you. Escalators and lifts became common in India just a few years back. Well, the old fashioned lifts have been around for a while....but I know what you mean. I've been to Africa and seen how things are. I've been to Kenya too...but it was only to the airport (and a short hour of sightseeing...not too far from the airport) and of course, the airport did have an escalator. It's just the first few times and then you'll get used to the escalator (if you have the chance to use one). I grew up outside India and elevators and escalators were common where I was at. But my relatives have not even seen an escalator. And they have used the elevator only a couple of times recently after it was introduced in certain shopping malls.

Ok friend, good to hear that u r not laughing at me. Glad to hear that you have once stepped in my country....... I will one day get into the escalator and see how it behaves. good thing i have heard some tips from u.

It depends really. If there is no-one else or very few people on the escalator then I will usually walk up as it's rising; but if it is packed I will just stand there. Elevator etiquette is to stand to one side if you are planning to stay still but not everybody seems to do this so sometimes even when I DO wish to move up faster I have no choice but to stand there. If you want to try something different Sandhya, try running UP the down escalator!

lol...James, I don't think I want to try that....nor do I want my kids to try that. My older one is very careful on the escalator after a bad experience on one when he was around 4. He was holding on to escalator and when he reached the end, his hand automatically went along with it (he didn't realize that he had to let go). His hand got sucked in and I was right behind him. It happened so quickly that we didn't have the time to look around for the emergency stop buttong. I managed to pull his hand out. His whole little hand had gone right in. The force was such that his skin got scraped...but the brave little fellow didn't cry. I'm so glad I was right behind him. Imagine if I was a little ahead or behind....I wouldn't have been able to pull out his hand on time. I didn't know it was escalator etiquette to stand to one side...I actually thought it was rude if someone behind you tried to get ahead by walking past you (it's not like one has to wait ages for the escalator to reach the next floor).

Goodness me, the experience with your son sounds pretty scary actually! And than God he ended up with scrapes only. I have read articles and seen news stories about children's shoes getting caught in escalators but never anything about hands like in this case.

That was scary alright. Even though I was right behind him, I didn't realize right away what happened because he didn't cry out. I saw the look on his face before I realized what happened. A major part of the skin came off that day.....he had a scar for a year or more (he still has a light scar which isn't very obvious). I literally PULLED his hand out.

Same here I've been to escalators since my childhood.. Escalators are new to India because it recently got common to common people.. due to Metro.. SO many people are still getting introduced to it. And they just don't know the "escalators manners".. It is preferred quite a stupid act to run or walk faster than the escalators!! And I must admit I am did the same thing once.. yes ran up in an escalators, I was getting Damn!! late that day. But now whenever I feel like I am getting Damn late I just take the stairs simple. Its faster dude!! Even when I am not in any hurry I take stairs .. Have to shed those extra fat in my waist line...

It's too hard for me to use the stairs with a toddler at my waist and a couple of bags.

In general I would say that I let the escalator do its job, i.e. take me up or down in its own time. But for example when I'm on my lunch break and say I'm at Marks & Spencers where they only have escalators to take you to the other floors I tend to walk up or down the steps quicker to save time. When I'm at the airport and on the walking escalators which are flat level (I think they're called moving walkways?) I tend to walk across those as they're quite slow and it does take ages to get to the check-in gates...

Yes, the moving walkways. I don't walk on those too...lol. I'm embarassed to do so even when I'm alone. I don't know why. I stand there like the Queen. It must be a funny sight to anyone who is watching.

I have been on escalators since I was a child. My older son when he was younger had a fear of escalators and this was problematic sometimes. We went to a central large library and they had escalators which he was too frightened to go on. The staircase was for staff only and so we had to be escorted up and down that by a member of staff. The longest escalators I know about are on the London Underground. Carrying lots of luggage it can be challenging to go on and off them. I walk up or down if I am in a hurry or just stand still on the escalator if I am on time. I went on a lift that arrived on the floor with a bang and a hard landing that almost knocked me over. Earlier this week I was at a shopping center and saw a little boy, of about three years old, with his fingers stick in a lift. He was screaming and the security officer set his fingers free after about two minutes. The poor child had to go to hospital. Children's fingers should be kept away from lift doors and the edge of escalators.

Tell me about how dangerous these things can get! My older son has had a bad experience with escalators. Even lifts can be dangerous (like the incident you pointed out). It's better to be careful everywhere....but things can happen even when you are careful. That's the cost we pay for new technology.

You are right some of the people run up on escalators, which they should not. Here in Delhi, now a days one find lots of Escalators on big Malls and Delhi Metro trains. Many people have become habitual to it, while some just run up or climb down on escalators, despite warning borads. I cannot understand, if someone wants to run up, he should use normal stairs, instead of using escalators. I do not climb up or down, while standing on an escalators, I allow the escalators take me, one of the escalators on the underground Metro line takes more than one minute for upward or downward journey, I just wait and do not run on it. Happy Diwali to you!!

If I'm in a really big hurry, I might walk up the escalator, but since I have trouble with balance and stepping down, I don't often go down them. I've always liked escalators I remember it was a thrill to go to a store where they had them when I was a child - like 50 years ago!

I remember when I visited England in the 1960's seeing people, INCLUDING a young man with one leg (probably lost is during the bombings as a child) going down the escalators in the tubes by leaps and bounds. This young man had those crutches that loop around the arms, and he'd grab the railings and just drop himself several steps at a time. I think they are like stairs, you reach your comfort level and go.

Oh yes... if I am in a hurry I cannot wait for the escalator. I know children run up and down the escalator because they are so excited to see the escalator. My son who is 2 years old keeps going to the walking escalator's you have in the airports. I know children will find those very exciting because they move on their own and the feeling of going fast makes them wanting to go back!

Here in Bangalore, the walking escalators are everywhere (not just in the airport). I hardly see the old type of step escalator anymore. I still stand and wait to get to the top or bottom ...even when no one is on the escalator. I can understand how the escalator can be exciting to a child....but these things can be dangerous. Read my comment to James above about what happened to my son when he was younger. Make sure you are with your child all the time when he is on the escalator. My almost two year old is very excited to see an escalator too. But he knows how to stand still on it...he's got used to it because we stay right next to a mall and visit it every week. But he still wants to stand on his own when he wishes and we let him. But I'm very watchful because the little one can't be trusted to not get into trouble.

what you say is absolutely right. My husband or me always stay with him whenever my son goes on an escalator. And whether he wants it or not we always lift him in the beginning or the end no matter how hard he is trying to stay on it .

interesting question.. normally when i ride the escalator i would just let the escalator take me up or down.. if i had wanted to 'move my feet' i would just use the staircase... but there are times that i just need to 'race up or down', to get somewhere extra quick.. then, i would run up or down the escalator... so i guess it really depends on the situation..

escalator - walk? run? why?
It really depends on if I'm in a hurry or not. If I'm in a hurry, I'll trot or run up the esculater or down the esculater but other than that, I'll stand right where I am till I get to the top. Be very careful on those things though because you can get your clothes or hair caught up in them and well, you get the picture. They're very dangerous.

Yes, I know first hand how dangerous it can be. My son's hand got sucked in because he didn't let go of the railing even when we reached the top. It was one scary experience. I literally had to use all my strength to pull his hand out. He could have lost his hand or arm if I had not reacted quickly.

Yes, it is dangerous...and so are elevators and so many other things we use. I guess that's the price we pay for technology. I'd prefer going back to the old ages if that was the case...you can't have high rise malls and ban elevators and escalators. A better choice would be not to have high rise buildings. But if that was the case...there wouldn't be enough living space for humans (not to mention green space if every piece of land was used for housing).

Wow! What an experience! I'm glad he's ok but yeah I bet it was scary!! I think the esculaters should be banned. I've heard a number of stories of people getting hurt on them. It makes me wonder how many have to get hurt before they're banned, doesn't you?

Yes SV I have been on escalotors while travelling ,but it is very recently that this "luxury" has made its way into my small town.An air conditoned shopping mall was opened here recently ,spreading over four floors.and I am told that the first few days, there was a big rush there. It was later that I understood the reason... There were four escalotors there, and youngsters were queueing up and having fun just going up and down.... that two with four of them in a row...!!! Well in my opinion, its best to stand and let the escalator do its work, rather than scarmble up and down, thus disturbing the other users. Also I find even now there are people here who are scared to use it,and I try to help them ,as much as I can..

Since you 'small town' is my hometown....I'd like to know where the new shopping complex has opened. I don't want to miss it the next time I visit (which MIGHT be during Christmas vacations). I usually experience the luxuries at my hometown only when I am visiting my parents....my in-laws avoid such places.

loooooool..interesting topic SViswan well if me depends on how in the rush i am..if im just walking with no deadline time for another occupation, then i will just let the escalator take me to the other side lol. but if i run out of time, then yes i will walk or run up/down stair if there's no1 using it else than me lol.. another Question to add : have u ever seen a person who has their 1st experience using the escalator ? like they're so afraid n doubt to start the first step lol..were u like that too at 1st ?

lol..I doubt if I was like that the first time I used an escalator....because I think I've been on an escalator as far back as I can remember. I grew up outside India and as far as I remember I've always used an escalator. Just like my kids use it matter of fact now in India...I just used it as if it was the most natural thing in the world to do. But I do know what you mean because when I experienced the walking escalator, I didn't hesitate....but it did get a little getting used to. I've also seen many elderly people in India hesitating to use it....especially since their reflexes are slower than youngsters, they are scared to take the first step and need to be coerced into stepping on to the escalator.

I usually take let the escalator take me up or down... i do not see any point in going up or down... when the escalator would eventually take me there... aside for that... i think it is dangerous to do that... so i always remind others not to do that... since they might trip... or a piece of their clothes might get caught in the escalator... and that is not a good thing to happen...

I confess to be one of those who likes to run up the escalator, even still, but only if there aren't other people. Hubby, on the other hand is like you, and it would never occur to him to use the device for what I'm sure he would consider a purpose other than for what it was intended, rfl. My first escalator ride was at the now defunct Marshall Field store in Chicago when I was just a little nipper. My family traveled to Chicago by train and rode the elevated downtown just to see that store and ride the escalator. That was our Christmas present. We couldn't afford to buy anything there, but we did go in for the escalator ridek, but we bahaved ourselves that time. No running!

i always let the escalator take me and it is very rare i step up in the escalator, and i dont think there is anything wrong in it, we know there are many people around but we dont know their work and how urgency they are and all their personal matters which make them climb up the escalators and it is nothing wrong but i also know there are a few people who also just run on the escalators for fun and it is not good but they are doing it on their own risk and hence it depends on the individual.

I don't think it's wrong unless they are pushing past other people. We don't have really long escalators here and one can just save a few seconds by rushing up. Of course, it's dangerous to doing it for fun (but I don't think many people are aware of it...atleast in India). I've seen many people move up or down when they are alone or when there aren't too many people on it.....I don't think it's wrong...just thought about the fact that it's funny that I wouldn't want to do it myself.

Escalators scare me in general. When I was a child, I once put my foot on a step and took too long to step on with my other foot. The escalator began to move and I almost fell down it, except for that my mom pulled me on at the last moment. Nowadays, I am very cautious. Typically on down escalators I always stand still. It seems to me that those are the more dangerous types. However, sometimes when they are going up, I will walk up the steps. It does make it go faster. I always keep my hand on a railing.

I'm scared when I go with my kids. My son had a bad experience when he was 4 and that scared me even more. He could have lost his hand if I wasn't right behind him. He was holding on to the moving railing and when he reached the end, he let his hand go along with the railing and it got sucked into the hole below. It took all my strength and that of my sister's to pull his hand out. I couldn't move for a minute or so after we pulled his hand out....it was just so scary thinking about what could have happened if I wasn't right behind him. Now I am very careful, especially with my little one who is much more adventurous than his older brother.
