Do you throw away your pumpkins after Halloween?

After Halloween has come and gone, do you throw your pumpkin away? Compost it? Or cut it up and steam it to eat? I often do cut the pumpkin up and steam it. This makes a wonderful vegetable side dish. Excellent with butter, salt and pepper. Sometimes the pumpkin may get a black scorched look inside from a candle burining but simply cut it out. Also, I like to use a potato peeler first to peel the skin from the pumpkin pieces before steaming.

There's no way I would throw away a Halloween pumpkin! All that good food going to waste? I trim, cook and puree it for Thanksgiving pies as well as pumpkin cookies, muffins, soup, etc. It's the cheapest good food for you this time of year.

We leave our pumpkinds sitting out on the porch to decorate for Thanksgiving too. We don't carve them as that seems to make them go bad fast I let my kids draw faces on them with markers and stuff. We leave them out their until they start to get rotten then we throw them int he trash.

I have never used a Halloween pumpkin for cooking after Halloween. I guess I could this year because the kids did not carve them. They used these little plastic pieces like Mr. Potato Head pieces to make faces on them.

Even if the pumpkin is carved, there are still useful pieces for steaming afterward. It is delicious and hope that you had the chance to try it!

I roast the seeds and use the rest for pumpkin pies & cheesecakes. I hate to waste any vegetables!

this year, i'm not doing a pumpkin because we're in the process of moving. so i need to save all my strength and energy for packing boxes. normally though, i compost the pumpkin. i have a compost bin in my backyard. once the compost is ready, i used it on my flowers. it works better than fertilizer. i never thought of cutting it up and steaming it. maybe i'll try that next year

Composting is an excellent alternative. Steaming the pumpkin after Halloween is a great way to get some tasty nutrition. I cut the pieces out that are still usable (not the carved pieces) and I peel the pumpkin pieces. Then I steam it. Goes great with rice and fish. Thank you for your response and hope the moving has went well.
