Check out this short video that was on our local news web page. It reminds me of a rat terrier we used to have when I was little who would "kitten sit" when the mama went outside.

It's hard to watch something like this without feeling something good inside. I just wish human animals could put aside their prejudices as readily.
Did you have an animal who would look after a baby of a different species?

Not sure why but I can't get the video to load for me. If it is what I am thinking it is I saw something on the news about it, not sure if it was yesterday or when but it was a little dog who would not leave some kittens in a burning house? All kittens and the dog were safe and sound. I agree with you no matter what the video is about, more humans need to do like animals and put prejudices aside.

They did have to give the dog oxygen, but yes, all of them were fine with minor injuries to the Mr. Mom dog. Here's another link - I hope it works. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/3265234/Hero-dog-risked-life-to-save-kittens-from-house-fire.html

Awwwww--I heard this story on the news last night and bravo for that dog (they named him Smokie) for saving those little kittens. Wonder where the momma cat though was?? Those were really small kittens..newborns

I know - they were about 5-6 days old. Maybe mama had gone outside for a break (ours used to). They didn't mention her - if she'd been lost in the fire, I think they'd have said. But, maybe they wouldn't have in Australia news. I don't know. They didn't seem concerned about their care, so I'm assuming mama is alive and well.

Thaks for posting and sharing this video it is really cute. If we remove prejudice, love would reign and we would live in a better place. © ronaldinu 2008

I'm curious where the mother cat was during all this. Usually a mother cat won't leave her babies or go too far from them.

Such a brave little dog..risking his life to save the baby kittens...I am so glad the firefighters got there in time...
My poodle let a 4 week old kitten nurse on her, but she didn't have any milk but the kitten would suckle anyway... The kitten was eating mushy food we prepared..

Yes, I am feeling quite a bit better. It's like night and day the last two days compared to last week.
Anyway, the dog reminded me of Patsy, a dog we had when I was little, who used to get in with the kittens when their mama would go outside to pee, etc. She'd sit in there with them and if they tried to get out of the box, she'd pick them up and put them back in. She was the best little dog.
Shady's quite a bit the same way, but more with people. She's definitely a people cat. I told you how she came to get me and made me follow her to rescue Debra, didn't I? Now she just comes to get me to follow her to show me the water dish is dry.

You're right - our Patsy sure did have an instinct. She once killed a sewer rat she felt was a threat to us. She was acting funny wanting to get outside, so Dad opened the patio doors and she flew out the door. We could hear her attack something and little screams and screetches. She was Dad's baby and he was quite upset since it was dark and he couldn't see her, so he ran to get the big spot light he had and by the time he got out to her, she had killed it. It was half again as big as her!
