When you go to the grocery store do you buy name brands or generic brands?

When I am at the grocery store I buy name brands on colas, milk, and mayonnaise that I know of. And, on pain relievers like Motrin. There are some items that are just not the same in generic form. What about you? Which do you prefer? Is there really any difference in them?

I donot like the generic spaghetti sauce either. But most other items work pretty well. I buy all the generic brands that I can too. Sometimes they are a whole lot cheaper. Thank you for your response.

when i go to the grocery store it depends weather i get name brand or off brand. if its like cheese or something i have to get kraft. i do not like the off brand cheese it just do not taste right to me. but most everything else i do not really mind. except for when it comes to cereal. i always get the name brand and not the off brand. but other that that i am not to picky.

Thank you for your response. I have to buy the name brand in some products too. The generic brand just does not taste good in some products. I like name brand cereal too.

Whenever I go to the grocery store, I would buy things that I am familiar with and have been using regularly. For example, I am using a Darlie toothpaste for brushing my teeth. I would not buy any other brands because I am already comfortable with this brand. I use Laurier sanitary napkins and will never buy any other else. If it is not in the store I went, I would go to another store to find for it. I think many of the stuff that I am loyal is the personal care products. As for other things I think I am not that choosy. For example I will buy whatever cooking oil there are in the store, as long as it is the cheapest in price. Usually I will go to the Tesco Hypermarket because I can get a lot of cheap groceries in there. I think for food there is not much difference in it. The food tastes a bit delicious if the price is higher, I guess. But for personal care products, like soap and detergents it is important for me to get the usual ones because I can know there is a huge difference between the cheap ones and the more expensive ones.

Thank you for your response. I too buy name brand personal care products because I have found that the generic brand is a waste of money. They just do not hold up. We buy name brand toothpaste, but not mouthwash. We also buy name brand soap, not generic.

I think it depends on the food product. I'm sure everyone knows that there are some products that are worth more because they are better, but I don't think anyone wants to pay twice as much for a smaller box of cereal, so when it comes down to it, I think people would buy generic, but you have to think of quality as well as quantity!

Usually when my mother does the grocery shopping she buys name brand things on most things, but on other things she buys generic brands because they are just as good as name brands, and we used to buy a lot of Pepsi and other name brand sodas, but now we buy stuff like Cola and Sams Choice because it is just as good as Pepsi only a little cheaper since food prices are so high, and it is good to save money whenever you can.

We always buy name brand colas like Pepsi or Coca Cola. My family does not like the taste of the generic colas. I guess each persons taste is different. We do save money on other things generic though. Thank you for your response.

I buy named brand soda pop and cheese slices. Other than that, I go for the cheapest. I don't think there is much difference, if any in most things.

i usually buy name brands though they are expensive because i think they are probably have higher quality. but poor quality of some name brands is uncovered from time to time so even the quality of name brands cannot be guaranteed nowadays. so as long as i can make by myself, i do not buy processed food.

My brother worked at one time in a company that manufactured corn dogs. They made these corn dogs for their own brand and several other brands. All of these brands sold the same corn dogs only under a different brand. If I find a good generic brand that seems to be like a name brand then that is what I use. Thank you for your comment.

It really depends on what I'm buying. If I'm buying shampoo, then I want to get the brand name ones. But if I'm buying vitamins, i don't mind getting the generic ones since it's probably the same vitamin C anyway. It's also cheaper to buy generic brands when the item is quite expensive. Some groceries are known for their generic or in house products which is great because they're more affordable. :)

I prefer the branded ones with groceries we consume at home. I don't want to change brand with items I have been regularly using. For as long as I am already satified with the branded ones there is not reason for me to shift to a generic brand. With medicine though... I buy generic sometimes because I've proven them to be as effective.

Hi jane! I have learned that if I can save some money on buying the store brands I will do it. I'd much rather have the name brands on certain items like cola, but I can live with the store brands. For mayonnaise I have to have Hellmans. There are a few things I must have the name brands of. But most of the items I do buy are store brand items and quite frankly I really can't tell the difference. I get the generic brands of medication and that seems to work so why not try it with other things as well. Like I said when it comes to certain things like peanut butter and yogurt and hot dogs I stick to the brands that I like. But on other things if I can save some money I sure do try.

Sometimes the generic brand is so cheap that I have to at least give it a try if I haven't tried it already. I have tried the generic peanut butter and yogurt and found that they were not the same. Some items though seem to be the same as the name brands. Thank you for your comment.

it depends..i prefer generic brands when it comes to toiletries and and other non-food items.. while i go for brand names when it comes to food such as canned goods, milk, cola and chips to name a few... it's best if we check the label before buying a specific product..

I always check the label too. Also, I have noticed that sometimes the generic brand will be a much smaller size and you have to compare the generic to non generic to see if you are really getting a good deal. Thanks for your comment.

I do not buy a lot of name brand items. Unless they are on sale I go generic. We are a family of 7 and do not have a lot of money. I do prefer some name brands but can not get them a lot. I think that when the kids start to grow up and move out then I will be able to buy more name brands.

We are a family of 5 and I try to buy as much generic brands as my family will eat. There is no reason to buy them though if they are going to be thrown out. Thank you for your response.

When you buy generic brands it depends on what you purchase sometimes you can tell a difference. When I go into the grocery store I normally buy whichever brand is on sale. If I have purchased the generic brand one time and it did not taste good, I would not purchase that brand again, but if I had never tried a generic brand that is on sale I'm going for the sale item.

I agree with you about the generic brands. If I know that my family will not eat the generic brand then there is no reason to buy that item. It is what your family will eat. Thank you for your response.

It depends on what I'm getting whether I'll get the store brand or the name brand. Most of the store brands are just as good as the name brand and the only difference is that it costs a whole lot less for it. I do prefer Campbells cream soups over the store brand ones, that's about the only thing where I really notice a huge difference. Other items that I buy name brand only would be Mayo (has to be Hellman's lol) and margarine. If the margarine is for use on bread or cookies, I'll use name brands, but if it's just for using in other baking and stuff, then generic works just as well. I buy more store brand stuff than name brand. It's just not worth it to waste the money on a name brand when the taste is often just as good.

There are very few things that have to be name brand for me. One of them is ketchup - it has to be Heinz! And I can only drink Coca Cola. There are a lot of things I prefer but still usually get the generic versions. One of them is cheese, I almost always buy the store brand but if a name brand like Armstrong is on sale I'll get it. It does taste better but I'll save the few bucks instead.

I buy Coca Cola or Pepsi, always name brand drinks, not generic. Also, we buy name brand mayonnaise. We have bought generic ketchup and mustard, but the taste was different and the ketchup was too watery. Thanks for your response.

I'm the opposite of you in a way. I usually buy name brand medicine that ive used and trusted, but for food i buy generic and if it tastes terrible then ill buy brand. I do this because im paranoid about medication and i could care less about what food gets inside of me. xD
