Is there a scent/aroma that brings you back to a particular time in your life?

I was on my way home the other day when I smelled lanzones (a fruit popular in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia) peelings being burned. I was suddenly transported back to the time when I was still in elementary and my mom used to burn lanzones peelings as katol (mosquito coil) substitute. It has been proven that burnt lanzones peeling can serve as an effective mosquito killer. I don't know if its smell has other effects, but I can certainly remember being very studious during that time. Haha...

Yeah, there are several scents which take me back in time whenever I get to smell them. And yes, I do agree with you regarding the lanzones peelings being used as mosquito coil substitute. For one, the smell of leaves being burned remind me of times I've spent with my parents and grandparents who are living in the province. Now that I'm married and have a family of my own, I don't get to be with them most of the time. Aside from this, we are residing here in the city. Then, there's also the scent of a certain type of perfume which I used to smell from one of my male seatmates. I have to admit that I fell in love with the scent. Okay, truth be told, I also fell in love with this guy but unfortunately, we never had the chance to have something between us except being friends and seatmates. Naturally, I never told him this. And queer as it may sound, there's this particular local female radio personality whose voice brings me to my in-laws' place in the province which used to be a serene environment and place to live in; specially when I close my eyes and let my imagination wander. Not that it's a crime-stricken area now, but most of the land were bought by the government to be converted into a channel. Oops! I think this last entry of mine doesn't belong with your topic on scents and aroma. This is more of voices, I'm sorry.

yeah... I love my perfumes.. I changed every brand and keep tha bottle in safe so that whenever I want something to remember I used to smell them to bring back those memories in mind. And I still remember I told to one of my friends that when I got amnesia just take my perfumes and try to smell it to me. Surely, memories will be back to me. hahaha..!

I have a million of these... it's a fact that our sense of smell triggers memories like nothing else. Here's one of my most silly ones: the smell of Scotch tape reminds me of Christmas.

I havea few scents that bring back a paticular moment in time...the smell of gingerbread brings back the Christmas of '83 because we had gingerbread ornaments that were made of wax but very nicley scented just like gingerbread. In '83 I was 4 yrs old, so not knowing any better I took a nibble of one of the gingerbread men...the taste wasn't as good as the scent...lol. till this day the gingerbread man sdtill bares my little bite marks.

the scent of ylang-ylang brings me back to those days when my childhood friends and i used to play hopscotch barefoot on the warm sidewalk underneath an ylang-ylang tree in our old neighborhood. =)

Broiled chicken makes me think of Christmas because it's a must in our house every christmas. Lysol makes me think of the years i spent living alone in another city because i had my way then of how to take care of a house. I disinfect everything LOL! Also, the smell of roses makes me look back on the time i took the hardest exam of my life. Because i used a perfume which is rose-scented then. Have a nice day!

Amusing connection with your memory! I have many memories that are linked to smells. I always get a very clear memory with a sudden waft of an aroma. Many times its good, but sometimes, its an unpleasant memory, but I move on..

Smell is a powerful transporter.Sandal wood smell takes me back to my child hood to the hospital where I was standing before my grandma's bed smelling the sandal wood oil applied to her gangrened toes due to diabetes.

May he r.i.p. so it brings me back to the days when i wait for him to come home, i dont really know where he went those days but he always brought with him a chocolate bar called serg... im not sure if they still make those nowadays. anyways, he always used to tell me that they came from america!!! whenever i open a balikbayan box my mum has sent us, i remember the time i used to roam around the malls in england. they smell exactly like that!!!

This is going to sound odd, but the smell of money reminds me of my dad. It has a clean smell about it and my dad is the cleanest man I know. Old Spice reminds me of him too. I remember being a little girl and telling mom that I wanted a dollar. I would go and smell it and carry it wherever I went. My dad used to go on the road alot and I missed him. I absolutly hate the smell of Pine-sol. It reminds me of my old babysitters house. She had 13 kids on top of my brother and me and that's what she cleaned with. It's horrible. Vanillaroma car "trees" remind me of sneaking out to lunch as an underclassman at lunch time. My boyfriends car always smelled like that. Bonfires remind me of my pregnancies. I used to sit out back and smell it and it was calming when I was miserable. It also reminds me that there isn't much time before the snow falls. Aspen cologne was what my stepdad wore when he danced with me at a friends wedding to the song "End of the World" by Skeeter Davis. I am sure I have a million more--as I have a sensitive nose, but these are my favorites! Happy Mylotting!!

hey there bananarit, Sure, there are plenty of smells that bring back memories, or either certain places, or certain people. The smell directs information to your nose, that's why when you smell new things your brain is trying to understand what it is or whether it smelled it before. It's quite impressive. But yes, for eg. when I smell burnt wood, it reminds me of childhood roaming around in the backyard of my grandfarents country house. Certain perfumes that I wear remind me of my ex boyfriends and so on. Cheers!

The smell of Old Spice (mens aftershave) always takes me back to when I was a little girl growing up. It reminds me of my grandfather, sometimes, the whole house would smell that way. Even now, I can smell it and still think of him, and the fun things we used to do.

I have one girl who I remember whenever I smell that perfume. It's so weird thing.. It just cuts like with a knife. It was my first love, and now, everytime when someone has this perfume, and I go by from her.. it's just so weird feeling. And all the memories come back.

yes, actually it happened this weekend, We went back to my home town and we stopped at this farm along the way and the porch smelled just like my first house. My dad built the house and it burned down when I was 9 years old but I still remember soming home from school and entering the porch and this intense smell of apples and fall surronding me. It was not an unpleasent relexation but it also wasn't a happy one. Lilacs also do it for me because we had lots of lilac trees on our property.
