How do you Get Rid of Clutter in the Home?

I have just read some real-life suggestions on how to get rid of clutter in the home in a magazine. One guy mentioned that he has a box in his car for all the things that he did not want anymore or have no use for them anymore. If he finds such things in his house, he will bring them to the car and deposit it in the box. Once it is full, he will bring it to the donation centre. There was another suggestion by a lady. She tells me that she will find three things to pick that do not belong in the room, and keep them. After putting away the three things, she looks for another three things. She says that if she has to be called away, it's no big deal. She will start again when she has time. I think many of us have our own way to removing clutter. I spring clean every once in a while to remove clutter. I go around the house to identify the different areas which need to be cleaned and try to do 1 section per day. Each section must not take me more than an hour to complete. I move on to other areas until I'm done with the entire house. What are some of your ways to remove clutter in the home? I think it would be great to share some wonderful tips with other mylotters. Thanks for your response!

I have read so many books on this subject and they are all a little different but at the same time just reading them can get you moving on doing the cleaning and de-cluttering. I have 6 other people in this house, we have lived here for almost 15 years. My husband is a collector of EVERYTHING! LOL! Drives me nuts but what can you do. Well what I do is I slowly get rid of his things that I know he doesnt use or wont notice. I just hope that he doesnt notice when I do this. LOL! I have been going thru my books (Im an avid book reader and collector), they have taken over so much room that Im trying to part with some. I think my other problem at this point is baby clothes! I have to go thru them and seperate them and stuff and there is ALOT of them. The other problem is hubbys sport cards. *SIGH* With the books or anything that I decided Im done with I take to the Salvation Army or second hand book store we have. The clothes I think will be giving some away and selling some. I basically work room to room. Yesterday I did the computer room or at least most of it. Today it is my bedroom with all the books and baby clothes. I really dont like clutter. I always have a box ready for things I no longer want, a box for things that I do, a garbage bag for things that just dont seem worth even handing down and a box for things that shouldnt even be in that room. As I clean I put the things in the appropriate place and then make sure the boxes get to where they are suppose to be. I find that if I read a book on the subject I am much more apt to clean out. Good luck to all of de-clutters!

Hi, I already have a few responders with husbands who collects everything. I don;t know aht's with teh men these days? My hubby collects electric guitars. I can't throw them away though (he will definitely notice it) , although they are taking up so much space. In addition to that, he has his guitar magazines, books, accessories, amps of diff sizes, the list goes on. Today I cleared some things in that room and offered the unwanted stuff (most of them mine though)on Freecycle. How I wish I live near you, so I could get the books you are reading about clearing the house. I'd love to get some more tips. I have not looked at my book collection yet. It gives me a headache just thinking about them. As for baby clothes, I only have small drawers for my daughter. So whenever it gets filled up, I will have to take some out. I will separate them into 3 piles, those to be used as rags (since it is so well used I'm embarrassed to give them away), unisex clothes for my nephew and girly, pink clothes into another bag (I have yet to give them away to someone with newborn baby girl). I really like your idea of having the diff boxes, but I think I won't have space to have them all. I will just have one box for donation/recycling/give away. I think I work best this way.

When my daughter is a little older, I want to cultivate a habit of donating to others things she no longer needs. I think if we show it to them, they will pick it up from us. Tell them that other needy kids need the toys and maybe you can have a reward system to encourage them to give away their toys. Thinking of that, my 19 month-old daughter still have rattles when she was a baby, must get rid of those!

I am constantly battling to keep the clutter at bay at my home. Once I clear the place, I try my very best not to mess it up again. Other wise, it is gripe gripe gripe, wipe wipe wipe and then gripe some more before wiping some more. A ritual I hate to have to perform every year come near to the new year. What I usually do is to do a one time clean up. Rather than one section at a time. Cos by the time I am through all the section I drew up, the first section that I cleared would have been cluttered up all over again.

Well, for me, I hate to clean. So no matter how small the section is, it is still gripe gripe gripe, wipe wipe wipe and then gripe some more. :p Something that does not go down very well with my wife. But honestly, she is making a cleaner man after I met her. No chance to really leave my things lying around or get messy much.

I gripe and wipe at the same time . When it comes to some festive season, I have no choice but to clean it all at one time, but during those months in between, I just need a little motivation to gripe and wipe. I guess doing a small section will make me gripe less and wipe more.

Saddly my only way to stop clutter is to stop buying stuff. Other than that they are parts of my home that could be clutter. Thanks for the info.

Hi ShellB Stop buying stuff to avoid clutter is the best solution. But sometimes, clutter comes into the house in terms of gifts, other people bringing in things, the mail and so many other things. But other than that, I agree stop buying stuff is the best way. I have stopped buying T-shirt. Now I ask my hubby for them. He's a hoarder. I will tell him that he has not worn a particular T-shirt for as long as I could remmeber and ask him whether I could have it. I know he would say yes to those he does not really like. I get a free T-shirt and at teh same time, reduce my hubby's clutter. Good idea, what do you think?

I think if I ever get to move to a new house, it is the best time to clear as much nonsense I have in the house. But the prospect of that happening is slim, so I need to make do with this house and try to make the place as clutter free as possible. Having a new house is a lot of work, with the throwing and packing, and unpacking. When I was still living with my parents, we moved a couple of times. I got tired with all the moving. I think I will stay put. At least for now... I'm sure you'll get round to unpacking your stuff soon. All the best! If only you live next door, I can help you unpack, for a fee, of course!

I gather up all the stuff I don't want or need on a regular basis and then I will post them on free cycle or craigslist. I post them on a first come first serve basis, whom ever gets here gets them first!

Hey! I'm a member of freecycle in my country too. And I do that. You know what, everytime I post something there will be 10-20 replies wanting those items. It's a very easy way to clear clutter. The best part is that these people are willing to come and pick them up at your doorstep. No need to go out even. I love Freecycle.

I identified all the things which are cluttering our home. I put them labelled in a box and took some of them to friends, relatives and other charities. This way I have less clutter at home. © ronaldinu 2008

That's a great way to remove clutter from your home. At the same time, others get to benefit from the items you have removed. Excellent! Thank you for your response!

As I get older, I have less and less clutter in my life because I don't buy anything that I don't really need. When too many books pile up, I sell them on half.com or trade them online. I do the same with movies. You can sell DVDs on half.com and Amazon, or trade them. I seem to need less stuff in my life these days. As long as I have something to read, movies to watch, and my writing to keep me busy, there isn't really much of anything else that I care about. No needs -- no clutter.

Hi unusualsuspect, I understand what you mean. I'm actually buying less already. I feel that I can find whatever I need to read at the library. I have stopped buying books. I don't watch much movies either. I have to be more careful with my spending now that I'm not working and I discover that I'm not missing out if I don't spend on things. Bu tliving with people who do spend and accumulate stuff does not help me to have a clutter free environment. So I need to clear as much as possible. Clearing things out help me feel better.

Thanks a lot for these wonderful tips. I myself find it hard to declutter because I tend to attach sentimental values to a lot of things. Hence sometimes I find it hard to throw them away. What I have learned now is to throw away or give away stuff that I don't really need especially if they have been sitting in my closet or drawer untouched for a year. Also, if you are undecided if you are going to throw away stuff, put them in a box and decide later on if they are really worth keeping.

HI berrylicious, I have not tried putting undecided stuff into a box yet. Maybe I should try that. I usually, keep or throw away/donate. There is not in between. But I guess it would be good to have that gray area and decide later whether I want to throw them or keep them. Like you said, if they have been sitting there for more than a year, it's time to clear them out. Thank you for your response!

hi Sydney, Those are some really great ways of getting rid of clutter. When I was younger I wouldn't do a huge throwing out of my things until I moved but now my hubby taught me that if I don't use or see something in one year and don't feel that I miss it, then that's when you should throw it out or give it away. For clothes, I usually hand down clothes depending on wether or not I gain weight or lose it. Have a great day

Hi nixxi, One year is a good time to consider whether you really need something or not. I use that gauge too, especially for my clothes. Experts say that we wear only 10% of what we have. So, really, there is really a lot that could go to a better home. I just gave a pair of jeans to my aunt. I bought it after I gave birth. Then I lost weight, so it became loose. She just told me that she could wear it. I'm glad. Thank you for your response!

Hi Sydney, thanks for such amazing tips on getting rid of clutters, actually, I usually do mine spontaneously. Sometimes I get frowns from my kids having given some of their usable stuffs/ toys to donations. I wish I could be more effective in doing such t maintain order and cleanliness in the house. Thanks for the discussion.

HI mjmlagat, Spontaneity is good. Sometimes I do that too, especially when I have the urge to clean up and throw away things. I think I do better then than when I schedule spring cleaning time. When my daughter grows up, I want to cultivate the habit of donating stuff they do not want or have no use for. She will put them in a box and we shall give them to charity. Order and cleanliness never lasts long when you have kids. My daughter makes the most mess around the house! We just have to do it in stages.

Thanks for those tips. As for me the clutter is removed or donated as well. If I know i can;t use it I just give it to another who might need it. I think it is good that we remove all the clutter in the house at least once a year.

At least once a year is a good start. My hubby does not even do that once a year. I have to nag and nag at him to clear, but once he gets started, there's no stopping him. I prefer to clear things out every few months, especially when there is an accummulation of stuff in the house!

Hi sydney! Well I don't really have the best approach to cleaning clutter because if I did I would be finished by now! I have been cleaning up my apartment since May on and off. Actually more off than on! I did a major clean out and throw out in May before I got my apartment painted. I hadn't done a major clean out in the 28 years since I moved in here. My boyfriend moved in in January and he needed more space so he made me throw out some of my junk. I am still throwing out stuff and trying to reorganize and redecorate. I am repainting some furniture too. So it is a major job that I have been doing. I cleaned out my closets about 3 weeks ago when I changed my clothes over from summer to winter and I threw out alot of things that I had been keeping for years. I couldn't even give them away because they were so old and messed up. So every year I clean out my closet twice according to the major season change-summer & winter. Once I get this work out of the way and finish throwing things out and put the apartment back into order that should be it for awhile!

I hope with your cleaning soon. I think it would be nice to have a clutter free home to live in for you and your bf. I also hope that you won't wait for another 28 more years to have another cleaning. I think if we keep up with cleaning every once in awhile, there will be no clutter at all. All the best!
