I read this wonderful article on RemedyLife.com about lowering your cholesterol. Like lots of other people I think of boring and bland, I can't eat anything good when I think of low fat. Well think again! The article is really nothing more than a long shopping list of great foods and ideas on how to spice them up for a NOT SO BLAND low fat diet. For example, "Top baked potatoes with spicy bean chili, low-fat sour cream and chives or low-fat cheddar cheese and broccoli." But that's not the best part. I goes on to give you some Healthy Indulgences - "Shellfish, especially shrimp. - “It contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health,” says Raffetto. Dark chocolate. - Flavonoids in cocoa can help lower LDL cholesterol. And one new study shows that daily consumption of a dark chocolate infused with plant sterols can help lower total cholesterol by 4.7 percent. Nuts and seeds, especially pistachios and sunflower seeds. Researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg recently found that among typical snack foods, these are highest in phytosterols—natural plant chemicals known to block the absorption of cholesterol in the bloodstream." The entire article is here http://www.remedylife.com/general/articles/content?cid=815&ctid=2 Were you aware there was so many HEALTHY LOW FAT, NOT BORING foods to eat? Does this shed a new light on LOW FAT cooking?

Thanks for the article, in my kitchen every little of bit of sat. fat counts. My husband is a heart patient. We eat a lot of seeds, tomatoes, and fiber foods.

I also have to add, eating bitter stuff like bittergourd helps cut down the cholesterol. I also hear that oats are good, but the important things to remember is none of these things work by themselves, its important to couple them with a good lifestyle, exercise and a healthy diet.

I think more people should be enjoying low cholesterol cooking. Most of the things you mentioned there are really very healthy. I like all of them also. There is nothing on that list that I wouldnt eat. So continue to post these things and maybe people will continue to investigate low cholesterol ways of eating.

Hi kathy! Yes I did know! I have had a cholesterol problem for over 10 years and have also been forced to take Lipitor and I must add not happily! My doctor who I trust with my life did not feel that watching what I ate was enough to control my cholesterol. I do watch what I eat and it is amazing how much you can eat and how good the food does taste even though it is low fat! I am so used to it by now that it really has become second nature for me. I also have high blood pressure and am on meds for that too. Thankfully. everything is under control. So not only do I have to watch my fat intake, but also my sodium intake. And everything has sodium in it! I learned that really quickly.

Hello Redkathy! I like the idea of cutting the cholesterol in your diet. In fact, i like it to introduce in my entire family. We don't have any restriction diet but the idea of being healthy and take care of yourself ahead before it will be bad is not bad at all. And it surely sounds good.

These are great tips. I take the fish oil capsules everyday. This does make you feel better about many good foods. Eating healthy like this can really make you feel better. I cut out alot of junk foods and sugar and replaced them. It really helps.

THAT is one article worth taking a look at. If there are nice foods to spice up the diet without getting off track, it is worth a second look. Like I mentioned in a previous article, the key to any diet is discipline. And if the diet has foods that are good to eat, it helps in keeping up that discipline to stick to the diet. The biggest challenge for a lot of dieters is the way the food is prepared. If one can include some indulging food to make it nicer, it helps a lot a lot! Thanks for the recommend on the article!

I thought shrimps give high cholesterol instead of helping that? Most seafood has omega-3 nutrient such as fish. That's why eating low cholesterol seafood like fish will help increase the HDL (er..the good cholesterol) and lower the LDL. Dark chocolate is good, that's obvious. :D I think you can try fresh garlic too. I heard it helps also.

The doctor says the contrary, you will have to read the full article and decide for yourself. I love shrimp anyway LOL
