if its a guy you are trying to reject, there's no gentle way to do it, cos he just reads that as try harder next time. You have to be firm and clear, which in no means is to be rude, just soft worded but firm. Consistently use this a couple of times and they are sure to get the message.

Well, take it one level stronger then. If you have been politely saying no, then get a little on the edge of rude and ignoring. Take it higher and higher till it pays off. I know it sounds mean but otherwise men do read signs of hope if you tend to be considerate with saying no! Like I was breaking up with this guy who was totally wrong for me and he kept going after me - brought me a rose and wanted me to take it just as a "friend" not for love. I said no and he said he would have to tear it up if I refused and I hated to do that to the poor flower, but told him that he could do just what he wanted, I really did not want the flower, cos roses convey love and we weren't in it. He tore it vehemently to see if I would stop him, but I patiently stood watching till he finished and then said bye and that was that. Better to hurt him and save yourself the trouble of being stuck with someone you dont like than to punish both of you being in a friendship/relationship that will hurt more than help!
