i have seen people put up pay to click websites and other free money making websites in there profiles and there friends list and there discussions and i did it today and got chastised for it is this against policy if it i wont do it anymore i just thought since i saw others doing it it was ok but i guess i will not do it anymore in here

i think the problem was you put a referral link in your actual discussion which is against myLot guidelines.
you can put links and banners on your profile page and direct people there.

No, you have it wrong. You can put a referral link in a discussion if it fits the discussion. You can't start a discussion just to publish a link. Discussions are for conversations between people. They're not ment to be used for promotion.

In a perfect world, it might be okay to do what everybody else does. In this world, it's better to read the rules and know what's allowed. Or you can just keep following the leader and take the consequences. The link to Mylot rules is on every page of the site -- FAQ and Guidelines.
