Have you ever tried to joke around a bit here on myLot, only to have it backfire on you? Have you used humor and found that it just didn't translate here in writing? Did you accidentally tick someone off? What happened? Did they tell you off or even delete you from their Friends list?

When did you ask me that? Hey, never worry about ticking me off. I'm very easy going and you are my friend. I did message you once about a discussion that I started about tipping in restaurants. I started it yesterday or the day before. This is where I apparently ticked some guy off and he deleted me. I wanted to see what you thought about what I said. I'm really surprised by how this internet thing actually has the possibility of hurting my feelings. I thought that something like this would never bother me. I really hate being misunderstood. Check it out for me and see what you think.

Well a while back I got upsset about a comment about eating dounuts I took it as making fun of me being over weight. it upset me. I wrote a discussion about it. That was a mistake I had everyone telling me how to lose weight. I never once asked for advice on how to lose weight. Since that discussion I don't start alot. In plus I have multiple sclrosis. I exercise but I am not able to get out as well as others. Now that the weather is cooling down I will be able to get around better. Heat slows my body down.

I haven't tried humor in here. I'm not sure how it would come out.

Why do people give unwanted weight loss advice? People seem to think that others should be so grateful to hear their words of wisdom! Thanks, Shaun! You are great just the way you are!

You have to be REAL careful out here. People put our text into a translator and it could have a completely different meaning on the other side of the World. It is funny to see some of the responses. I am, at times, very sarcastic. I think some cultures do not have a full understanding of sarcasm. LOL. I just go on.

I wouldn't think too much of it. Most people don't get offended that bad and not get over it. :)

I did not know about this translator thing until you have just told me. I would think then that many things (phrases, slang, cultural things, etc.) could get really lost in translation. EEEeek! Now I may be paranoid! I really don't want to offend anyone. I'm generally a non-confrontational type. Thanks:)

No this hasn't happened to me. I don't try written humor except maybe a pun or two. I'm not clever that way .

Hi ya rocketj1 I can't say that this has happened to me - yet. I usually joke with people when I know them a little bit better and will understand where I am coming from. I think that is what you have to do, suss people out first!!

I think that I would be very careful to joke around as so many people are sensitive to religion and race etc. Also there are the cultural problems - what is acceptable being said in one country is not acceptabler in another. I will give yo an example. I came to Jamaica from England and when I first taught out here I told my students to sit their backsides down so that we could begin the lesson. (they were standing) There was uproar in the classroom and I didn't know what cauysed it. The girl's were looking shocked and the boys were laughing. It turned out that the word backside is a curse word in Jamaica but in England it is considered a polite word for bottom! I don;t think thaT i AM BRAVE ENOUGH TO JOKE MUCH!

I am not aware of really ticking anyone off as of yet as most of the people I interact with are pretty used to my personality by now. But I am pretty sure that there have been times when my humour was wide of the mark or not acknowledged. Sometimes things can be said that we understand perfectly and think are quite witty but they end up going over the other person's head! I am sure many of us have done this one time or another.

I think that I have started to make someone a wee bit mad at me but then cleared it up. I try to be as careful as I possibly can with my words as I know things can get lost in translation here. It's so easy for things to get mixed up with all different cultures here, and I know that if people use translation software for some of the things here, the translation could come out to be quite insultive.

It did not happen to me yet! So far all humors I've used have been well taken. I'm glad I've not ticked anyone yet that way. I'm quite careful in using humor to avoid being misunderstood. There is just one particular reason that made me delete 2 friends but that is already water under the bridge. I also have severed a tie with another friend because of another reason as well. However those deleted friends did not in a way affect me in enjoying myLot.
