costume idea for 3-year-old that doesn't involve masks?

So, I bought this lion costume for my son. He liked it in the store, but when it came to putting it on, he gets upset because it goes over his face. He screams and will not wear it. It is a one-piece type outfit, so I am not able to just use parts of it. Does anyone have any ideas for homemade costumes that don't involve anything going over his face?

Will he tolerate makeup? Then again I know as a kid is it annoying because when you touch your face you mess it up, and that gets really annoying for a young child. He can be something that wears a hat. He can be a doctor. Any kind of human occupation would work.

My 3 yr old is going to be a scarecrow. A pair of overalls or jeans with some patches sewn on them, a flannel shirt and a straw hat with a fake blackbird pinned on it. I also have some straw that I attached around his ankles and hands. He looks really cute and it was easy and he really likes it. Its not scary at all and the clothes are big enough that I can layer other clothes underneath if it is cold on Halloween night. It snowed here tonight so it doesn't look too good for Friday night.

That's very clever. If I can find a straw hat, I'm good to go. Thank you for the idea.

You could dress him up as a dice. Take a box and paint it white and draw or paint the black dots on it. It would have to go over his head but just to get it on, his head would b out and you cut a hole on each side for his arms to go through. I did this with one of mine a few years ago and it was really cute. Don't get a very large box or you'll be watching him tip over! LOL Also if he likes animals you could get him a black sweat suit with a hooded sweat shirt and make him a tail (you can use black pantyhose) and pin some ears on (make out of cardboard)to make a cat. You could paint whiskers on his cheeks. When I did this one I put the reflector stickers on their back because it was so dark. It sure is going to be cold enough for it! LOL Good Luck and Happy Halloween!

oh yeah a mask on a three year old . that's very scary, and traumatic. Just cut the top off. You can sew a little right? Just cut off the head, and give it a little sew job to make it look clean. Then you can put a small amount of makeup on him. Some black on the tip of the nose, and a few whiskers. I'm not sure if lions have whiskers lol, but still. Also if he has hair, just mess it up. Make it look bushy like a lion's mane.
