My Oldest daughter is almost 9 years old. She really wants to help with dinner. Do you think this is too young to learn how to cook? What was the first thing you learned to cook and how old were you?

my daughter is 11 but since last year, they had cooking in their school, even though they're not really the ones cooking, it's the teacher, atleast they were learning. and i do teach my kids on how to turn on the stove and am starting to teach them how to cut using the knife, well, basically, im teaching them the basics of cooking.

I think the basics are the most important. She does have a cooking club at school for like a month but it is very hard to get into. I am not even sure how they run it and who cooks. I have thought about putting her in a cooking school around here that is for kids but they are very expensive and she has Taekwondo too. It will be hard to schedule everything.

wow...shortbunny, you're a very supportive parent :) your kid is very lucky to have you. i, too, want to enroll them in different kinds of classes, but the major problem is the funds that should be used... :)

If you take the necessary precautions, I believe that you can help and teach her how to cook even at a young age. Make sure that health and safety measure are observed. If there is fire to put on or an electrical equipment, make sure that you are the one to us it not her. @ ronaldinu 2008

I am trying to teacher her the measuring thing now. She finds it a bit hard but she has grown to see how math is important. I also have stressed the fact that she can not lick the spoons until all done and not at all when we use raw eggs. Hands must always be washed!

I know the first thing I learned was baking cookies. It was a lot of fun and not long before I did it by myself. I think I am a better wife and mother because I know how to cook.

The first thing I learned to cook was a grilled cheese and I was about 7-8. I have 2 sons and 2 step daughters, my son's were helping me in the kitchen since about 3 they would stir and add ingredients, both love to cook now one is 19, the other is 13. My 13 year old will even come up with his own recipes and cook diner at night. My 2 step daughters, they were 7&8 when I came into there lives, and my son would show them how to do things and now when I dont feel like cooking they will prepare the meal, we also have recipe night when everybody picks a recipe to prepare, and they love bakeing cookies and cakes, etc. The girls are 13 and 15 now. I think your daughter is the perfect age to start learning about cooking, youll love the smile and joy she will have with her first Cake or Cupcake, or her first time to take care of mom and make her a special lunch to share. Goodluck and God Bless.

This is true. I let her make a full meal (baked chicken) and it turned out great! She was so happy with herself. Now she wants to cook all the time. She doesn't understand that I can't let her because of the schedule but she is doing great at it.

I started cooking at a young age. I do not remember what it was that I first cooked though. I know that by the age of about 12 I was cooking full meals. For my kids I have made a rule, then can help with cooking but they can not use the stove or oven until they can touch the controls with both feet firmly planted on the ground.

that is a great rule but hard for us. we are very short! I am only 5 foot and my oldest will not be much taller then me. If I wait for that then she will be out of high school when she can cook. I figure if I can trust her to cook, in a few years when she is old enough, she can watch the other girls when her father and I want to go out.

I think kids are never too young to help with the cooking. It is good that she is showing an intrest because it is a helpful skill to posess. The first thing i learned to cook, form scratch, was spaghetti bolognese when i was 15. I used to cook thing like sausages and chips but this was the first proper dish is learned.

Good! I was told that she should not learn how to cook at a young age because she will try it when I am not there. It really worried me.

My two girls started at the age of 11 because they have a subject in school that teaches them the basic of cooking and both love to help me out in baking too.I let them do the stirring, mixing preparing the ingredients.there are times when I go out my eldest would volunteer to take in charge in cooking.Well, that is something to be proud of with kids now, they at least have the initiative to learn and be involved like your daughter. I was a third grader when I started to cook(9 years old then)That was when my mother gave birth to one of my 8 siblings.I was fond of watching and helping my grandmother cook, especially during the preparations of lots of special foods whenever town fiesta comes.Spaghetti was the first food i learned to prepare. It gave me more interest in cooking during highschool days,
