Star Rankings Getting Lower and Higher Due To Politics

United States

Many people have written that their star ratings are being affected because they haven't been voting for the right candidate (mostly Obama). They said that because they spoke out against Obama, others rated their responses negatively, taking away their star power. Now, I don't have a star yet since I'm new here but I have noticed that my rankings in politics has gone down sharply since I've joined in the discussions and said I was voting for Obama. This may not be a one-sided problem if you get my drift. I mean, the ratings in certain categories are done the same way as he star power ranking right? Or am I wrong? Let me hear if your ratings have been affected by this as well, or not. And I'm talking both sides....McCain and Obama supporters both.

I have posted a couple of political discussions recently and my ratings have dropped a lot I guess. I even posted a discussion about this and got some shocking information!! I never really cared about the star rating system but dismissed it as just opinion. Now I find out that it actually effects your earnings. Basically the higher your ranking the more you earn, and vice versa. I have been leaning towards Obama and perhaps some of my post were not received well by many. I still feel everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and what they think of me doesn't really bother me. Personally, I never give negative ratings though, even to someone I am in disagreement with, especially after I found it to effect your earnings here. I figured people were being childish and rated me negatively to begin with. The rating system should be done away with or at least revised in some way. There are a lot of supporters here for both political camps, you don't believe it check out some of these political discussions or post one of your own. See if your rating drops (well you have dropped off the chart). Either way, it doesn't stop me from posting whatever I want and I still get paid here.

I have heard that star rating does affect your earnings but I've heard others say it doesn't and being a newbie, I'm lost. However, if it does affect your earnings you are so right! They should come up with a system that will bring up who these childish people are and have them banned. I was thinking maybe reviewing the negatives and if the comment is well thought out and written like your comment and it was given a negative, then whoever gave it a negative should be reprimanded. That's in fantasy world though since it would take a lot of people and way too much time to go through all the comments on this site. So I guess we'll just have to live with the results and the ones who give negatives and take away our earnings because they don't agree with us on this topic or any other will just have to live with themselves. Somehow, I don't think they'll really care, though. As for your response, I have given it a positive rating. Maybe that will help in your question to get your rating back up. No, it's not a pity rating or a rating because you are an Obama supporter but because your comment was well thought out and written. I'm like you, though, I never give out minuses. If I don't think a comment is up to par or whatever I still won't negative them.

Sorry, my computer is acting up and I am trying to answer everyone quickly so I ended up typing question instead of quest. Anyway, good luck!

Keeping a star rating of 10 in a politics discussion board is near nigh impossible, particularly in a heated run-up to a presidential election! There is no way you will keep a 10 star rating if you choose sides (Obama or McCain). So if you want a 10 star rating, the only advice I can give you is to be very circumspect in your posts, identify which MyLot members tend to get 'overheated' and flame other users and therefore avoid their threads and posts, and above all don't choose sides. Problem with this approach is that it is rather safe and you are effectively curtailing your own freedom of speech by not saying what you think to try to attain a 10 star rating. Personally, I would say that this is not worth it as you are not contributing fully to Mylot and you are not therefore doing yourself justice if you follow such an approach.

It can get rough on the political threads. The star bashing cuts both ways and is not just against the Obama supporters. Republicans and Democrats are both walking wounded on here. I've been offended only a couple times. The last was when someone who was not the poster of the thread hopped into my little box and called me clueless for stating that we have a separation of church and state in America and it comes from the First Amendment. Actually, what she said was "Talk about clueless" meaning me for thinking such a ridiculous thing. DUH!

The star-bashing is going both ways - I have recently experienced it when I disagreed with someone - gee, I thought that was what a discussion was about - for each person to express their opinion!

newtondak, you are so right. A discussion is just that. A discussion. A place where you can either agree, disagree or agree to disagree about any subject in the world. As long as someone makes an intelligent and valid point, I am willing to listen. irisheyes, it most certainly does get rough on the political threads and the bashing does indeed go both ways. I had someone state, "if you can read and write" just because I was an Obama supporter and that kinda offended me, however, I didn't minus the person. Even if I wanted to because I felt it was rude to insinuate that all Obama supporters are basically illiterate, their comeback, for the most part was intelligently worded even if I felt they were wrong. I'm not going to negative anyone just because they don't agree with me.

I do not consider lowering a person's star rating to be expressing one's opinion. If I take the time to respond to a thread not matter how much I might disagree I ALWAYS leave positive feedback. As far as I'm concerned leaving negative feedback and calling it expressing one's opinion is about as sneaky as it gets.

Have my rankings ever been affected! I've been here since close to the beginning (of myLot) and I had a 9 Star and a ranking in the politics interest of about 50 until late spring when this election started to get really heated. You can see where I am now! I must admit for a long time I thought it was mainly the Democrats who were taking the biggest hits but I have noticed some conservative Republicans have also gotten whacked. There are and have been some from both sides of whom it could be said they "had it coming" for being disrespectful and downright abusive and "flaming" but for the most part it's happened to members who simply enjoy a good debate and in some cases have very strong opinions and are quite passionate about some issues. There's nothing wrong with that at all; I can feel one way about a particular issue and be very passionate about it and you can feel the exact opposite and be just as passionate but that doesn't mean we can't respect one another and even be friends and give each other positive ratings for making good, thoughtful posts. Unfortunately, some here don't see it that way but I guess that's to be expected. The best thing to do is to ignore these members once you figure out who they are, then they can't "hurt" you without trolling around after you. If you ignore them, eventually they'll forget about you...lol! Annie

Thanks so much for the BR! I'll also be glad when this election is over! I'm just glad that whoever it turns out it already looks like the turnouts are going to be record breaking nationwide which means more people than ever before will have had a voice in the direction in which our country goes next and that's the way it's supposed to be. Obviously, we won't all get our way but we're all Americans. Annie

Yeah, I can see that you've been affected. As heated as this political race has been and as passionate as I am about my candidate, I respect others opinions and enjoy debating with them. However, I have noticed several people who are so negative, love to name call and basically think you're ignorant if you don't agree with them. And I've seen it from both camps. I agree with you that we should be able to discuss things, agree or disagree and still be friendly. That's one of the reasons I joined mylot was to be able to express my opinions and make friends. I'm glad to see that there are people in this community that don't hold grudges. And thanks for the good advice. I'll definitely use that.

Yep, this is a rough board on stars and rankings. Dispite what some folks will say, it's being done about equally by both sides. As long as I as undecided my long held 10 was safe but the minute I started voicing an opinion in support of Obama or against McCain or Palin, down it started to go! Some folks gotta have that feeling of power I guess. Personally, I don't minue people but I did report one horrible post a little while ago that some others also indicated that they had reported. Free speech comes with a price I guess but the stars and ranking don't really mean anything so who cares?

It is definitely working both ways no matter what people say....I agree. Man, you have taken a hit for supporting Obama haven't you? But I'm glad that you didn't let the star ranking affect your freedom of speech. Some say the star ranking count and others don't. Me being a newbie here....I don't know one way or the other. All I do know is that I'm going to keep voicing my opinions as well. I don't want to call anyone names or be hateful. I just like to debate sometimes....it's good for the soul.

Oh, mine tends to drop when I post in response to certain people - so I don't post in their threads or respond to them. I tend not to minus people at all, though I did once. More to the point, I try to offset the fact that people minus others for posting negative opinions by plussing anyone I think adds positively to a discussion, no matter whose side their argument supports. Every once in a while, I'll just go right through a discussion and plus everyone who responds just because the discussion is a good one.

I don't necessarily think that the "certain people" are doing all the minus-ing - their threads just tend to collect all the most vocal and polarized responses, and their discussions tend to get the most heated.

See, that's what I was wondering. Do these certain people negative you because of a past disagreement and you think they are still holding grudges? If that is the case, it is wrong. We should all be able to disagree about something and then go on, you know? That is nice that you try to offset people negativing others by giving them a plus. Unfortunately, I have never really taken the time to notice nor give the negatives and positives unless I actually start the discussion myself. Still, I have never given anyone a negative.

Ever since I started posting and responding to more political discussions, I've noticed my star rankings go down. It was at ten, and now it is now, and still getting lower! I'm an Obama supporter, so it is happening on both sides.

Wow, another Obama supporter. I've found them to be a minority on this site, although I've been told it's more Obama than McCain. Oh, well. That's what makes this country we live in so great....freedom of speech. Although, at mylot sometimes that's not a good thing since both sides are reporting loss of star rankings. Still, I'm glad to see that most everyone is going to stand up and say what they feel no matter the consequences and I like that response. I'm stubborn and my sister has told me "opinionated" after reading my blog. It's not the fact that I get minused. If I wrote something that is not well written or just thrown up so that I could make money I would understand. But to be minused because of who you're voting for is just wrong. Yes, we know that going into political or religious posts is like walking into deep waters but I would hope that most people would respect other's opinions if written well. Well, chin up! The election will be over in less than 3 days. Oh, forget it. Who am I trying to kid. This Obama vs. McCain stuff will be going on long after the election is over with. *grins* Thanks for responding and I hope you don't go down any further. Good luck.
