How to make Windows XP and Vista faster?

After some time using clean-installed XP, it slows down a bit. Even defragmentation only help a bit. The problems are like slow startup, booting and shut down. I would like to hear suggestions how to make XP run faster without hardware upgrade, like what stuff I could enable/disable, install cool software, and some other things to toggle. I would like to hear your suggestions. Any helpful tips are welcome. I am also using Windows Vista SP1 basic on the other. With 1gig of ram, its pretty slow. Any tips?, because Vista is a bit of a jungle to discover for me.

you need to optimize your startup applications and also your services. those are the programs that are using too much memory in your pc causing it to slow your system. start button(orb for vista) run type "msconfig" a)on the startup tab, uncheck the programs you dont usually use, b) on the services tab, check on "Hide all Microsoft Services", then uncheck all the applications that you dont want to be running while your pc is in use or on standby
