What kind of operating system do you run on your computer? I run windows XP, even though I got my computer only a couple months ago. I have played around with Vista and dislike it and everyone I know that has Vista hates it. What operating system do you run, and do you like it? If you have an older one, are you looking into upgrading soon or are you going to keep running it and why?

Hello, depending on what i need to do i can chose different operative system. If i need to setup a cheap firewall, i use linux, in a specific distribution called IPCOP, if is a server the goal, still linux but in the slackware or redhat distribution. For desktop application i use win XP as well as Ubuntu linux. Vista requires too much hardware resource for my opinion, so i watched it a couple of times, but i never planned to install anyware. My biggest satisfation was few months ago, when i was called to setup a new company office, and they asked me what they could do to save some money about the computer. The result was a company equipped with 1 linux firewall, a surplus server running slackware, 15 workstations running Ubuntu linux. Was my first "microzoft free" company setup! And the best was they spent nothing about the software, and they are totally legal, coz is all GPL software. After a bit more than 1 month, the boss of the company said me "in the beginning i was so worried about your choice, but now i guess it was a good choice. The system run well, we not got neither a crash, and seems all is faster than before" (they was formerly running xp). I don't dislike totally XP, at least not so much as i dislike vista, but i really can't understand why people continue saying that linux is not user friendly. I'm sure they should say the same about the mac, just coz they muddle the fact they are habbit to something different with the fact to be user friendly. Is just like to say that a tap water is not user friendly coz you need to rotate it on the right to open instead than on the left.

Wow this topic really took off lol I have been lax about checking in here and was surprised to see all the responses! I used a computer with Vista the other day, was cleaning up a friends computer for them. I HATED it. Absolutely hated it. Was trying to download some antivirus software for her and uninstall some of that crap they give you when you get the computer new, you know all that trial software that you never use. I swear they asked me 10 times one time if I was sure I wanted to download the antivirus program, and run it, and install it. I got so fed up. because of all the freaking prompts it was asking it took me about double the time it should have.

i am running vista home premium on a core 2 duo computer, and i have never had any problems with it, and as far as 1 of your comments has said he wont use vista because some applications are not vista ready yet, well that's utter BS, if an application works on xp it will work on vista and there are 1000's of software programs that have already updated to vista compatibility, and here is another piece of info for you, by 2012 Microsoft will have XP phased out and you will no longer be able to get updates or support, just like they did with windows 98, and i am a Microsoft certified tech so its a reasonable assumption that i would know what i am talking about. but don't just take my word for it do some research yourself, there a lot of idiots out there that listen to stupid rumors and then spread them around like they are the gospel according to nerdism, i have a saying, "the only true statement is the 1 that you researched yourself" 1 more thing you have stated that you have played around with vista and dislike it, well that's your right, but i am sure that if you do the research you will find that there is more vista users that like it than there are haters of it, its the old rule, " i like what i've got and no one can tell me different" down here where i live we have a class of people we have labeled as traditionalist wousers, they would rather see their state go broke than accept change or progress, dont listen to this type of person, they will keep you in the dark ages and you will never experience the new and exciting things that are coming up.

eheheheheh, 2012 is far away, and for that date vista also will not exist anymore. Maybe Uncle Bill's company will have learned how to write a decent operative system for that date, that don't need a spaceshuttle engine and a terabyte of memory to run in a decent way. And about the application, there are people that don't use only the browser and office, and i can assure you lot of specific and custom applications have problems with vista (should be better say vista have problem with backcompatibily, but this is a well known microsoft habbit, since the DOS 4.0, launched togheter with win 2.10 and they were not compatible!!!!). Happy myLotting

Vista is really slow on older cpu's, but not on newer ones. Performance and security is quite reliable.

We have 4 computers in our home, 2 are windows XP, and 2 are Vista. I have been reading a lot about a problem with windows operating systems from XP and below. That you need to go and get a security patch or something. I just had my daughter do it for hers tonight, I don't have to worry about the other XP computer because at the moment it doesn't have access to the internet. What I like about Vista, it automatically updates everything for me without even bugging me. So anyone that has XP as their operating system should check it out.

I have two PCs at home, and both of them are running Windows XP Professional. I had these PCs before Vista was out, but I have no intention to upgrade to Vista after having heard so many stories about its performance. Besides I am quite happy with XP. I know my PCs are not that powerful to embrace this OS, so I think I shall stick to XP for a longer time. Perhaps one day if I have to dump one of my PCs and buy a brand new one with more powerful features, I may use Vista.

Hello dazzled. Well, my ignorance reveals itself once again on myLot. I have Vista and can tell absolutely no difference between it and XP. No kidding. I cannot figure out what people believe the "problems" to be. I can't tell that it does anything different than XP or others I've used before that.

We are using Windows XP also, I love it, its easy to use and our computers fast. We had an old computer that had windows 98 on it then we updated it to windows2000, but it finally got too old, and we had to replace it. The new computer we bought has the windows xp, I didn't want one with Vista, we kept hearing all kinds of bad things about it. I have a friend that recently bought her a new computer and she said it has Vista on it and she doesn't like it, she said it takes some getting used to, everything's different on it. So I'm glad we got the one we did.

I have only gotten a new computer about 3 months ago. I used to have xp, but my new computer has come with vista. I have heard a few people don't like vista. I am not sure why people are saying they don't like it. I haven't had any problems with vista. So. i will continue to use it as long as i have no problems. To be honest i don't know alot about computers. I feel that they both work fine. I didn't have any problens with xp either. So, i can't really say one is better than the other. I would have no problem going back to xp if i had to.

On my computer I mostly use Ubuntu Linux (I just installed 8.10 last night, am liking it so far) for everything except gaming. When the urge to game comes upon me, I boot into Windows XP (yes, a dual boot system). That's pretty much all I use XP for. Every once in a while I do something in a Virtual Machine with XP, but that's just playing around really.
