And, I'm not talking about poppy-seed bagels or cake, either!! It seems that a UC Santa Cruz grad student cooked himself up a batch of morphine-laced brew by way of poppy seed pods!! He claims he didn't know it was illegal. http://click1.nbclocal.com/lkodkkft_nzrborhno.html or http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_10822575 I'm not as much concerned that he made the stuff as I am that, as a grad student, and presumably a graduate of some Dare program somewhere, he had no clue that possession and consumption of a controlled substance was illegal! Or did he grow up on a commune somewhere (a relic of the 60s) where he was homeschooled and unaware of anything outside their perimeter? That's the only semi-valid reason I can think of for his not knowing this. Yet, sometime during his undergrad education, one would think he'd come across anti-drug messages and news articles of some kind, don't you agree? Do you have any idea how he might have come this far in life and still not know this?

He certainly knew it was illegal...He thinks by claiming to be ignorant he will get off...what an idiot..

He actually DID get off - in a way. He got a year's probation. If he screws up, the original charges stand. But, I agree - for someone so smart, he's a moron!

I think they put him on probation, but if he screws up within the next year, the "up to seven years" sentence would then be possible. I think he played dumb, but if they bought it, they're equally so.
