My natural hair color is red, I guess just close to the shade of new copper penny red, though not exactly that color and I'm not best sure how to describe the shade exactly. Also, my hair is not all the same shade, it is naturally multi-tonal and some of it is lighter then the rest. Anyway, as a natural redhead, I've gotten gray hairs on and off for years, starting when I was 18 as red hair often seems to go white or gray earlier then most for some reason. Anyways, I used to get just the occasional stray gray strand of hair every now and then and I could simply pluck them out and be done with it, but for the past few years, I've had way to many to pluck and so have had to color my hair to get rid of grays. I had been way overdo to color my hair, so today, I finally got around to doing so. I meant to pretty closely match my own hair color and just color the grays. I couldn't find my actual hair color or anything close in the dye that I can afford, so I choose a shade called, reddish brown. I have used this shade before and not darkened my hair to much because I didn't leave it on very long, so I figured I'd just leave it on my hair a little while, just to color the grays and that it might make my hair color slightly darker but not to much. Well, I got distracted and left the coloring on my hair a bit to long. Now my hair is a dark reddish brown color......with burgandy highlights! LOL! It's quite a bit darker then I wanted, but at least the grays are gone and I think it looks kind of cool for now anyway! In any case, I'm not going to worry about it to much as the hair dye I used is a cheap variety and I know from experience that even though the box says "permanent" color, it will fade considerably and be quite a bit lighter within a week or so. Just the same, do you color your own hair? Have you ever accidently overdone it? Did you like the results?

My hair is naturally a light mousey brown with red highlights. I've been dying and bleaching my hair since I was 18 (I'm 49 now) and have had just about every color of the rainbow! I have a close friend who is a hairdresser, a cousin who is a hairdresser and my dad's ex-girlfriend was also a hairdresser. Between those three plus reading several books on the subject I was pretty well trained on a variety of hair coloring techniques. For years I kept my hair a nice golden dark blonde with lighter blonde highlights. But when I started singing with my husband's band he suggested I lighten my hair a bit more. I agreed to give it a shot. So I bought a light blonde base color and an ultra light ash blonde highlighter. I had never worked with such light colors before. My foiling skills are fine when I work on other people's hair but were never great when doing my own hair, it's just very awkward working on your own head. When I got done the highlighter had bled into the surrounding hair at the roots and looked terrible, sort of like someone dripped big white paint splotches on my head. I knew the only way to correct it was to strip all the color out of my hair and try to ADD color back in. By the time I got done I had bleached my hair 4 times and added toner twice in 3 days just to get it to a color I could live with. I'm actually surprised I didn't go bald from breakage but I kept it well conditioned and treated it very gently until it grew out a bit! I learned some very valuable lessons and haven't had a problem since. Experience is a very good teacher! I keep my hair very much like my avatar now and have got that technique down to a science. My next adventure in hair is extentions! I've got the hair and all the equipment and did a ton of research on techniques, all I need now is the nerves to just DO IT!

"When I got done the highlighter had bled into the surrounding hair at the roots and looked terrible, sort of like someone dripped big white paint splotches on my head." Wow! That must have been some experience! lol! I think extentions look great on some people if done correctly. You'll have to let us know how they turn out whenever you get the nerve to "just DO IT"!

I've had my share of horror stories from coloring my hair. Then I started going to get it done at the salon. What a difference. Dark colors will fade out quick so don't worry.

lol, thanks but I'm not worried. I actually don't think that it looks to bad, but it is a bit more of a dramatic change than what I was going for. I'm sure it will fade to a more natural looking change fairly quickly.

Oh yeah. I usually use one of the cheaper brands. I have noticed though with the cheaper brands they seem to never be the color I want right away. They have to fade out a little. I did change brands and the one I use now seems to show up as the color I want most of the time. I have had a couple of oops a few years ago. Sometimes I had to just get used to it but a couple of times I had to turn around and change it cause I did not like it.

I've actually used the same brand and color as I did this time before without getting such a dramatic change, but this time I left the dye on my hair to long, lol. It will fade soon though, lol.

A consolation for you is that Dark dyes wear out much faster than if you were making your hair lighter. I am a naturally dark blond and thought it would be fun to be a brunette once. It was considered permanent color and yet it only lasted about 2 - 3 weeks. Good luck!

Hehe, I'm not worried, I know it will fade quickly. I actually don't think it looks bad in the mean time, just a bit more a dramatic change than what I was going for, lol.
