Hi,I have nver travelled on a ship. Have you? I would love to go on a ship - the closest I have gone is to travel on a ferry from Dover to Calais. Once my husband and I visited a ship called Doulos which was berthed in Colombo for viewing by the public. It was great to see the interior of a ship. If you have ever gone on a ship, please share your experiences. Thanks

I think the Doulos is a very old ship which functions as a floating book exhibition. I've boarded it before when it sailed to the port here in Singapore many years ago. I was in the navy for 2.5 years, and during that time, I served on board a few warships. It is not exactly fun, because it was work and the ship conditions are usually cramped. There were lots of climbing to do because unlike cruise ships, warships don't usually have elevators. I was onboard a cruise ship once in the early 90's when I embarked on a cruise-fly holiday to Phuket, Thailand. I was quite a large cruise ship that could take about 800 passengers. I sailed for 2 nights, then disembarked at the port of call in Phuket, then stayed in a hotel there for another two nights before flying back. So it was like 2 holidays in one. The cruise itself was quite enjoyable. There were ship tours, game competitions, 24-hour movies shown in their theatre, 5 meals a day, casino on board, nightly cabaret entertainment and a host of actvities and amusement by day. I took part in a table-tennis competition, and guess what, I emerged the champion. I quite enjoyed this cruise, but I have not gone for another cruise since then. When I was on holiday in Europe in September 1982, I crossed the English Channel on a Seaspeed hovercraft from Calais, France to Dover in England. I think it was either the Princess Anne or Princess Margaret. It was a large and fast craft with 4 huge propellers but the journey was very noisy. It was my first experience on a commercial hovercraft, and it was a journey I've not forgotten till now.

I won the table-tennis competition because the competitors were all amateurs and I was quite good at the game. But the prize sucks...only a notepad, given out at the end of the night's cabaret show so I went on stage to collect it. Anyway, it was memorable, something I can talk about years later....hehe.

Wow, you seemed to be having loads of experiences on sea. You are lucky. The cruise ship sounds fun and congrats on being the champion table tennis competition! That would have been a bonus. Thanks for sharing yr experiences.

Ship - Cruise ship
I have traveled on a cruise ship several times. these ships are massive and you feel as though you are in a hotel. They have everything you can think of to make your trip as comfortable and enjoyable as it can be. There are many restaurants, pools, shops and stores, movies, bars, hair salons, you name it, and the ship has it. I have always enjoyed the Captain's ball, where you get to dress up and go have a nice dinner and dance. Ships are a really nice way to travel, if you are not in a rush to get to your destination.

Yes I have been on a ship ,and has travelled from my country to Singapore, while studying in college, with some friends......It was a wonderful experience, and being students, the ship's crew were very nice to us and though we had second class tickets they let us move around in upper class decks and have food in the there.......Though it was mt first journey by ship,I never felt sea sick at all, unlike most of my friends. There was a library and many indoor games ,to keep us entertained. And in the evening there was musical seessions too..We took 3 days to reach singapore, and while there we could come back and sleep in the ship at night, thus saving us the need for looking for accomodation or food......It was indeed a very wonderful experience.....

You and I both share a dream.I have always yearned to travel on a ship. When my Maternal Grandmother immigrated to the United Kingdom, she went by ship.I thought this was a fascinating and adventurous way of travelling.I was a kid then, and I always felt that one day when I grew up I would visit my Granny in the U.K. and I would go by ship.It was not to be,time passed my Mother went abroad to visit my Granny and Uncle there, she went by plane.I did eventually go but after my Granny passed on.I also went by plane.I would still love to travel on a ship.

No and I never want to go on a ship any place, I am terrified of deep water and would not go on a ship or a cruise for anything at all.

In my late teens, many years ago, I worked on a large fishing ship. I helped the guides by baiting lines and gaffing the catches for the guests. This was off the eastern coast of Florida and a few times in the Gulf of Mexico. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I have once traveled on a ship, but then I was too young that time to remember how it feels to travel by ship. Now that I've grown up, I would like to experience, how is it to travel on ship. and I got lots of questions, where would I sleep if I travel on ship, what is that cabin, is it individualized or it is a one room full of people where you can just lay and sleep. Well I really don't have idea, how a ship looks like inside.

Hi! My country is composed of over 7,100 islands, so travelling by boat and ships is very common here. My very first ride was when I was just a child going on a summer vacation after First Grade. That was a time when ships were slow, and the ride took three days (it now takes around 24 hours). The ride itself was quite an adventure - I could feel the vibration and hear the hum of the ship's engines everywhere. There was a peculiar smell all around - seawater. I would look out at the wide expanse of sea and sky, and got thrilled at the sight of big and small fishes, in small groups or in large schools. I loved watching out for the flying fish. I have since taken boat rides countless times, and it's pretty much the same except that ships have become faster. Oh, and I have noticed that fish in the open sea have become rarer.

Is a ferry not a ship then, what makes a ship? I once went on a Russia hydrofoil from Bratislava to Budapest that was a fun trip. And once went in an old submarine left over from WWII in Hamburg. Have taken lots of ferries to different islands but never a real ship.

Well, I figured that a shi would be much bigger than a ferry with more activities to do and ferries are for short distances whereas ships are for long distances. Wow, you have gone on a submarine. Thats is so cool. What was it like?

I have been on ferries between Dover and Calais as well. It was a shame when the Hover Speed ceased its operations. I used to travel on that a lot because it was a quick way to get to France. When I was at university in Wales I took a high speed ferry to Ireland. The sea was really rough and everyone on board was really seasick. When I was traveling around the world I traveled by ferry from Singapore to Sumatra. Once in Indonesia the vessels were in very poor condition indeed. I have done some sightseeing on the Cutty Sark a historic ship found at Greenwich in London.

I've only traveled by ship locally. We went on a beachy cruise a few years ago. It was great to go island hopping on such a nice ship, but I think it would have been better if we could stay on the island longer. We only had a few hours on the island, while we spent most of the time on the ship. In fairness, the ship was nicely made. The rooms were cramped, in my opinion, but the food was good and there was enough to keep us entertained.

Hi, nilugo. Same here. I haven't had the opportunity to do so yet. Actually, I seldom go traveling. But I love traveling. I've been to a beautiful lake, taking a boat on it and listening to the boatman. He used the local dialect to tell the story. It was a wonderful experience for me. And I hope I can travel on a ship one day.

Hi, there. Just like you I have not ant experience on a ship except the ferry. I just have been on a ferry from one bank of Yangtze River to another bank. I am expecting someday travel on sea by a very big ship. That must be exciting and wonderful. But when will that someday come? I am still expecting.

Yes, I've gone to a ship many times. Before, when the plane ticket price was as high as buying a small lot (NO JOKE!!!), we prefer to take the ship to go to our destination. It will really took 2 or even 3 days for the traveling but its worth the stay since we were able to see a lot of places and there's a great bonding moment with my family.
