A movement has been spreading, supporting the statement "Human milk for human babies." Some women try to sell their breast milk in hopes of making a few bucks, and other women choose to donate their milk to milk banks, where it goes through testing and then a pasteurization and sterilization process. And even more women, decide to donate their surplus directly to families in need of the precious milk.
Generally, the women donating (donors) and the families recieving (recipients) work out their own arrangement and agreements. Many families request bloodwork from the donor, and usually pay for the expenses, while others do not. Recipients usually cover any shipping costs, if necessary. But regardless of how the arrangements end up, they are completely up to the donor and the recipient.
Most donors choose the direct donation route because they have a deep emotional connection with their milk, and with direct donation, they are free to ask for photos of the baby their generous donation is benefiting.
A new site has popped up. http://www.breastisbestbaby.com and the whole aim of the site is to help connect donor moms and recipients. The site does ask for a small donation from recipients, but in comparison to the costs of formula, this donation is miniscule. And all the money the site recieves after heir domain and hosting expenses, goes to assist women who need help obtaining breastpumps and supplies, as well as to help recipients pay for shipping.
