Should parties pay to get out the vote?

I was signing up at the Halloween parade to volunteer for the Barack Obama campaign in our area to encourage others to vote and while I was signing up a guy next to me doing the same thing signing up asked if they paid us for our help and when he found out they didn't he backed out. I was really suprised by it because I personally feel like so much is at stake and this is one way you can help make a difference. I just wondered to myself if this guy had a clue what was going on after seeing that. Do you think parties should pay their callers and door-to-door help? I think that would mess things up and I would think volunteers would make more of an effort than people getting paid.

They have to spend enough money on the campaign for other reasons. Not to mention pretty outfits and lipstick! So I guess it makes it easier this way. Plus, someone has to volunteer!
