The Fruit That Fights the Flu
Our Most Popular Tips »
Once November hits, the rest of the year is a giant sprint to the Richard Clark ball-dropping finish line. Here’s the game plan for keeping healthy through it.
Start by getting a flu shot. Then, buy yourself a bag of apples and munch away. The quercetin in apples may help bolster your immune system during vulnerable times.
Boon to Immunity
Yep. Apples (and red onions, broccoli, and tea) are great sources of quercetin -- a flavonoid that may stave off the influenza virus when the body is under stress. In a recent animal study, quercetin did just that: The normal drop in immunity that comes with physical fatigue was pretty much cancelled out by the flavonoid. If it works as well in humans, quercetin could help power the body through both physical and psychological stress. (Is stress already getting the best of you? Use this tool to take the edge off.)
Talking ’Bout Disease Prevention . . .
Quercetin may not only quash the flu but also stave off health conditions like cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, and pancreatic cancer. So get more quercetin
I didn't know about quercetin, did you?

Isn't it funny that all these new studies and discoveries point right back to what grandma used to say, eat good food! I think all these type of studies have some level of validity. Personally, I eat good food most of the time. Lots of vegetables and fruits for sure. I eat regular food for a snack, leftovers and such, rather than junk food.

Thanks for posting this. We get so focused on Vitamin C to prevent winter illnesses that we don't take into consideration that our bodies need a wide range of nutrients to be healthy all year 'round.
I did know that Apples, onions, garlic and broccoli were great foods for staving off illness. The old saying "an Apple a day keeps the Dr. away" is an apt reference for the many benefits of the apple and it's byproducts such as cider and vinegar. But so many people don't take into consideration that there is no one food that is perfect. A wide variety of foods is necessary for optimum health.
