Which image converter is the best low cost option to use when converting Cannon's Raw image format? I used the Digital Photo Professional on my other computer, but it will not work with this version of Vista. I am currently trying a trial version of Corel Paint Shop to see if I like it.
Out of the many conversion softwares that are out there, which would you recommend both for performance and cost? I am still looking for that perfect software. Any suggestions would be appreciated, LOL!

I am a long-time PaintShopPro user and its RAW conversion is seamless: you just open and work with RAW as if it were tiff or jpeg. However, I do not understand your problem with DPP. It works fine on my Vista laptop.
There is a reported problem with some versions which prevented cropping ('trimming')from working properly on some Vista installationsbut if you have the latest version (3.01)it should be OK. Check on the Canon User Forum.
If you can't get an update from Canon for some reason, there is a simple solution: just run DPP in Windows XP Compatibility Mode.

I have the new 64 bit version of Vista on this laptop and it will not work with it. I have talked to Cannon support a couple of times and they tell me there is not a version of it that will as of yet. I have even tried downloading the patches etc from their site and they just don't work on this one :(
I do like the Corel program so far though, and it is not as pricey as Adobe. I just can't rationalize spending the cost for Adobe considering what I use the camera and photos for.
I did like DDP, but so far, even in compatibility mode have not been able to make it work properly.

Oh the joys of running Windows! I was seriously considering moving to a 64 bit system when I replace my computer later this month. Now I am not so sure!

Prabably the sensible way to go, Lindsay. Nikon sell you their NEF converter as a separtate program, unlike Canon that includes a very professional set of imaging software with each camera. But even if you had the NEF converter with your D70, it seems that it doesn't work with all the newer models...you have to buy another version, and use a separate one for each! I believe you recently acquired a new SLR, so that might impact on you if you want to take advantage of full professional editing.
The plug-ins for Photoshop and PSP are free and included with the programs, and as updates when the need arises.
