If someone were to ask you where the nearest payphone was, would you be able to

tell them?
I recently started a discussion about rotary phones. Most everyone agreed that it had been YEARS since we had used or even seen one.
Well, what about pay phones? Do you have any in your city or area anymore? Would you know where to find one if someone asked? Have cell phones eliminated them altogether?

Forgive my ignorance but I don't now what a rotary phone is!
with my job I have to be on call 24/7 and can't even go to the bathroom with out my cell phone. If I turn it off when I am in church then when I turn it back on again I see something like 17 missed calls. This was driving me crazy so I decided that if it was urgent then the person would call me again. Family and friends know that I don't return calls and so will call again. If I do get complaints from anyone then I tell them that I do not take calls whilst driving! Have a great day!

Funny you should ask that question as I thought they had all disappeared until I just saw one yesterday still at a local convenience store. So the answer is yes I do know!

I know where 1 pay phone is. It was right outside a grocery store here in town. I noticed it because there was someone on it, putting money into the machine. I found that to be so strange. I would have loaned her my phone to make a call. So no they are not ALL gone.

I don't think payphones can or should ever be eliminated. I am against cell phones and do not own one, so if I'm away from home I will need a pay phone. I do know where the nearest is, it's down the block at the convenience store. Hopefully we'll never see them all eliminated because those of us who do not like to use cell phones will be quite stuck without pay phones.

Oh, I totally agree about cell phones. We currently have a tracphone that we use only in emergencies in our car. Sometimes if my son needs a ride after an event then he gets it to call us to pick him up. But it is frightening to think that they could take payphones away. I know that there are some that require a calling card too. Ridiculous!
I remember my dad telling me to always have a quarter in my pocket so that I could at least call home if there was ever an emergency.
Thanks:)

When I was about 4 years old and was first learning my phone number my mom taught me how to call collect from a payphone if ever I needed. I never needed, and the company she worked for had a toll free number which I learned at a young age. Luckily the company was a very small business with only a few employees, so they were all like family. If I called and couldn't reach my mom, whoever I talked to would come get me or send help.

I think that we could just always assume where they would or should be and we would be right. I don't think that's possible anymore. Too many cell phones now. I feel badly for those below the poverty line who always have car troubles and such. It could get dangerous in some instances if you couldn't find a phone right away!

As long as they asked me while I was at home I would be able to tell them because there are a couple of them directly outside my building! But if it was somewhere else for sure I would be hard pressed to tell anyone where one was. Mobile phones have definitely decreased the need for payphones these days.

I have to say we used to have a pay phone on every corner but the cell phones I think have pretty much taken over. In our small town I think we're lucky to have even one payphone. We have a hotel here and the restaurant is on the front of the building. Right at the door enterance there is a pay phone. I have no idea if there's a pay phone in the bar or not because I have lived here since 1999 and I have never been in the bar. I think they should have pay phones in bars and taverns because I would hope it would encourage a no drinking and driving policy.

Actually I don't know where the nearest pay phone is...I know there is one at the grocery store and one at Walmarts but that's it. I wish we could go back to the old rotary phones b/c I liked them. I do think that with everyone having cell phones the need for payphones has dropped alot.

I have no idea where the nearest payphone is. They have been in very short supply for awhile now. I know when I was a manager of a Shell gas station 2 years ago we had 2 of them in the parking lot. I have not seen any around where I live now.

I've seen payphones around, but I tend not to notice them. If someone ask me, I'd probably direct them towards the nearest gas station or grocery store because where they are tend to be placed. If someone needed a phone that bad, I would just lend them my cell phone though.

Yes, we have many in our city. They are usually at grocery stores and any place that is off to itself. We have many places that has payphones designated in out city. I would be able to locate the nearest ones. We have many pay phones at many gas stations here in our town.

There are still payphones in the vicinity but sad to say they have not been working well. Chances are your coins will get trapped inside without the phone giving you a dial tone. Ha!ha!ha! Anyway there are landlines available at your service for a fee of 10 cents per 3 minutes so no problem! Those are more convenient to use and you need not face the risk of losing your coins.

You know I only recall one pay phone and I don't remember where is was. I think they are few and far between with the popularity of cell phones. I couldn't direct any one to one. I just remembered there is one at a convient store about 5 miles from me.

I have a constant stream of working holidaymakers staying with me, who often need to use a phone. As a result, I do know where our nearest payphone is. There's one in our local bar, though you probably wouldn't know it was there unless someone told you where to look.
There's also a couple in our nearest big town centre. I only know where those are as my kids like to play in them whilst I'm connecting at the wifi point which is just next door!

Hi rocketj. I don't really know where the closest pay phone would be. I think they probably have some at the gas stations so that is where I would tell people. We have a few gas stations and a grocery store near our house. I'm pretty sure they have pay phones.
