Finding someone to rent to us

I am finding this pretty hard to do. We have looked at a bunch of places, one in particular we saw last night. It is really really nice. Just what we are looking for. Problem is last year my husband was always in and out of a job and we were late on the rent just about every month. We had to fill out an application for this new place and one of the questions was, "Have you ever been late on the rent?" I put yes but then called and explained to the guy what had happened. He didn't sound too thrilled about it but I had put our old landlords name so he would have found out anyways. I really think that just blew our already slim chance of getting the place. Now I am freaking out cause I feel that every one is going to look down on us for what happened in the past and not rent to us. My husband has a really good job now (not great pay but great job security) so I don't see rent being a problem. But we live on the grounds where he works so if he ever changes job we will have to move out. Where will we go if no one will take us cause of our bad rental history?
