Reverse Hate Crime?

Today at work we were debating proposition 8 in the morning. For a lot of us, it was a moot point anyway since we already voted. But basically, it was one person who was for yes on 8, and the rest of us on no on 8. The guy for yes on 8 didn't have any good arguments, but one of the girls was getting really upset at him because her cousin is gay. So later in the day she goes outside, and allegedly shots out his lights on his car. She claims she didn't, but she was sure acting guilty and wouldn't let anyone search her car for a weapon. I don't like that anyone would vote yes on 8, but hey... I'm not shooting someone's lights out even if they did want to take away my right to get married. That is so messed up. I guess hate crimes can work either way.

Well, well, well. I guess the old rules really are true. You shouldn't discuss money, religion or politics.I can see getting so angry that you want to spit , but harm the man's car? No, that's too much.

We discuss religion and politics all the time at work. But usually all in good fun. We can have an argument go on for 3 or 4 hours, but then still all go out for lunch together and be fine. But I guess this girl just wasn't mature enough to handle that. I can get pretty angry, but I'd never physically harm someone or their property. I might jokingly smack them, but only if they would definitely get that it was a joke.

I am more like the girl than you. If something was said against my position, I wouldn't trash any property but I wouldn't talk or hang out with you. That's why i rarely talk politics.

I guess I just figure it's not this guy's fault because he was brainwashed by the church at an early age. And I like seeing him have to question his beliefs so I'll often argue with him about different things. But there are some people that I don't hang out with once I find out what kind of beliefs they really have.

I agree it's wrong to go and shoot someone's lights out or to DO something hateful or illegal because you're angry about someone's opinion BUT like you, I voted NO on Prop 8. There is so much wrong with religious folks thinking it's okay to take away a right. I have seen other people saying that marriage is not even a right, and that somehow *I* am wrong for believing in equality instead of 'traditional values'. I have a lot of problem with 'traditional' anything. I am not really a social conservative, ie I expect everybody to make their own personal choices about and for themselves. This doesn't mean ANYBODY has the right to make personal choices for and about ANYBODY ELSE EXCEPT THEMSELVES. What I have found with this Prop 8 debate is that the people who voted YES generally DO think they have the right to make choices for and about others, and it's high time they were told they have every right to say THEY embrace what they do but not interfere with anybody else no matter how they feel. The only 'right' I support taking away is the supposed right of traditionalist and religious people to promote anything against gay marriage or to think they can call ME names because I support equality.

Exactly! I think religious people should not be allowed to rule others with their beliefs. People tell me it's wrong because their Bible says so, and I tell them that I am an atheist and should not be forced to follow their book.

I think this crazy. You don't gain civil rights by violence; no one ever has or will. Lucky she didn't kill him; that would've just given the bigots a perfect scapegoat.
