I am not sure if there is an interest for this, but I thought putting it in Ice Cream would do just the same. It's starting to get colder and I am sure some parts of the world have already experienced the beauty and magnificence of snow. Do you eat snow cream yearly? Do you make it a one time habit, or do you make some every time a new blanket falls? Do you let the first snow fall, and await the second one as to cleanse the sky? Has anyone ever heard of "waiting for the second snow fall?" Do you know what snow cream is? Do you know to make the alternative (aka without snow)? Have you ever made the alternative? Have you ever made snow cream?
I think that this was my favorite thing growing up, waiting for it to snow twice and then getting snow cream. I know I would go the kitchen and watch my grandmother make it and then put it in the fridge (or was it the freezer?) and we wait for it be ready. I always wondered why someone would eat something cold like that in the winter, but I never complained. I also remember times when it wasn't even winter and my grandmother made the variation. It's just sugar, milk and vanilla extract without the snow, and it's really good too. Then she'd put in ice tray's otherwise it would be in a bowl.
So has anyone made snow cream?

OMG, I LOVE snow cream!!! It has been a very long time since I've had any. Never thought about making substitute snow cream but it makes sense. I think after adding the milk, sugar & vanilla, we put it in the freezer so it would start hardening once again as the milk would make it begin to melt. I stopped making snow cream when the air became so polluted. As I said I never thought of making the substitute . Thank you for creating this discussion as you have just brought back a bunch of WONDERFUL memories!!!

I am so glad that I could bring back memories for you. Yes we also put it in the freezer and I'm sorry I didn't make that more clear. Or wait, I think your talking about putting the snow cream with snow in the freezer am I right? Well in any case, make some substitute, It's just as good If I remember correctly!
Here are a few "tips" or "beliefs" that my family had about making snow cream growing up. I hope these help you, and maybe you'll make yourself a real batch next snowfall
1. First of all, we always waited for the next snowfall, and not the first. I think this was a "cleansing snow".
2. It always came off the top of the car, and never all the way to the car. Just a few scrapes where snow was still left and we didn't see the car. I think we also got it off the mailbox, but never off of porch railings or the ground directly.
I think that's actually all. I was going to say something about icicles, but that's different... lol.
I hope this helps!

I know I would go the kitchen and watch my grandmother make it and then put it in the fridge (or was it the freezer?) and we wait for it be ready. I believe it was the freezer to firm it up some.
We ALWAYS waited for the second snow also. We NEVER took it from the ground but some area like the car or the top of the well house. But that was back when we didn't have so much pollution!!! Docs are saying it is dangerous to eat now with all the strange things in the air. I do like the idea of making the alternative cream. It will have the same flavor without ANY pollution!!! I'm going to make some right now. I can make it one cup/bowl at a time & have fresh whenever I want it!!!

I hope you enjoy it then! I would make it, but I am not sure whether I want to do that or call my grandmother and ask her (or beg her) to make Potato Candy for me instead.. I don't know how to make potato candy and even if I did I don't think that I'd make it right...
In any case, enjoy your snow cream, bundle up if it's cold outside, and just enjoy the onset of winter!

I have never had snow cream. I am sure that it is delicious. I live in the a suburban area, but the snow I think would not be good to eat. There are many buses that pass by and the pollution that comes from them wouldn't be good to eat. I bet in the country where there is not much traffick the snow is good to eat. I wouldn't eat it in the winter time, I like ice cream, but as soon as it starts getting cold, that is it for me until the next year.
I rembember my mother making ice cream when we were kids, I do not remember what ingredients she used, but homemade ice cream is really good.
