Times have been tough. Things are getting more and more expensive and options are running low. I have been buying less and less and eating more and more of my stockpile. At the rate we are going some day there will be none. I am aware of it and doing what I can. I know that we will make it by but I have depended so much on my one year food storage. What if it wasnt there? I have no idea where I would be now. I have cut back on everything I can but will that be enough? How have you coped?

We have decreased our spending on non-essentials - eating out has definately been decreased.

Eating out? I barely remember it. When we get our taxes back this year if there is any left over I am going out. I want someone to ask me what I want for a change. Luckly we had non essentials that we could cut back on.

We have been watching on what we buy too. Trying to save on electricity and water so to save on bills. We are cutting expenses. © ronaldinu 2008

We are buying less and less. Christmas this year will be mostly hand made and definately a lot less of it. Bills keep coming so we are doing what we can to keep up on them all. Using less is all we can do right now. I guess we are mostly all in the same boat.

To be honest, we're kinda scraping by ourselves. Food-wise, we're stocked up for a few months due to our saving a can here, a can there this summer. (Plus some cereals and recent purchase of dollar-a-pound-honey from local beekeeper) But we go to the food banks to make ends meet, so if you're not doing that...that might be a good idea. We've been going to the dollar store for the non-food necessities like toilet paper, tampons, dish soap, laundry detergent, etc. There might be a non-food bank in your area too. I've been getting non-neccesary goodies via a barter website to cut down on my temptation to spend money I shouldn't. We've also been trying to keep our electricity usage down.

We have a good amount of storage and we will get by for a while, but if things stay as they are we will run out of our storage. Its hard to know that we are eating the food we saved for emergencies. I feel like this is a temporary set back but I dont see the end in site. Our electricity bills have been high too. We bought an oil lamp just reciently. I feel like we can see the oil going down and we seem to only use it when we need it. We have been sitting in the dark more, which really isnt all that bad.

I combine coupons with sales. I plan our menu around whatever the best deals are that I can find each week. Last week, I was able to get $40 worth of groceries for only $6.00 after coupons. I've been keeping a running total of the items that I have gotten for absolutely free and the value since January is over $1,900 and on some items I've actually managed to get money back after coupons for antoher $97.00. (I also track and make sure I give at least 10% of that away.) My biggest surprise this year was using coupons for clothing. Before school started I got my step-daugher 3 shirts on clearance for a total of $15.00. I had a $10 off coupon - so we got all 3 shirts for only $5.00. That was a big help with with the school wardrobe this year. When my husband needed socks,I got another $10 coupons from Penny's. They had packages of socks on sale buy 1 get one half price. So I got $24.00 worth of socks for only $8.00. Earning gift cards from sites on the Internet has been a big help also. I've earned $500 in gift cards so far this year. I've done lots of things to bring in a few extra dollars each month. All small amounts, but they add up. I've sold books on Amazon, items on ebay and had a yard sale. I also save my change and roll the coins from time to time and then deposit it and put it towards debt. It's kind of like having a part-time job, but for me I consider it a hobby. It's a challenge and I make it fun. I'm still learning, but over the last 10 months I have learned to stretch a dollar a whole lot father than it used to go in our house.

When I first started to use coupons it was like a whole new world opened up to me. I understand a lot more now. I used to mostly shop only once a month and now I shop most weeks. It is more work and I spend the same but we are getting a lot more variety and I think we may be getting more to put towards long term storage. I should keep a count like you. I love to see the progress.

My budget has been pretty spartan for a long while. I have cut back on driving, though, and I've further pared back on my grocery budget. There really isn't any more that I can pare back on.

Ive been cutting back on my driving too. Winter is almost here though and I have to send my son out for a snowy walk to and from school. Gas prices have gone down a good chunk so I think I can drive him there and back on the bad days.

I havent really bought a stock of food for a year. Foods does have expiration date and I'm afraid that some of them will expire in the same date that I don't want them to be in waste. Maybe you can start plating some vegies in your backyard so you could save some money.

I do keep up on the expiration dates. Most of the food I have has at least 2 years or more and many of it has over 30 years. When we buy new we rotate and use the older stuff so that we dont have the waste. So far it has worked out okay for us. We are entering into another winter and there will be no gardens until spring. I am planning our gardens and I am going to start the seeds in the house this year to get a head start and save some money there.
