Do we really have a balance of powers?

I don't understand much about politics, but if the House and the Senate and Congress are ruled by a single party. how exactly does the balance of powers remain?Shouldn't there be 50% Dems and 50% Reps to truly be balanced and so that everyone's voice is actually heard? How is it balances when the Reps had control of the House? How is it balanced now that the Dems will have control over Congress?

I was thinking about this the other day. Now we have a demecrat for presedient. And a majority of both the house and Senate being Demicrates there really is much balance. That has been Bushe's problem more demecrates than republicans.
