for an almost 9 year old for Christmas when toys and books are the last thing they need? My son has too many toys already and over 100 books. I don't want to go Scrooge and get him just socks and underwear. Any suggestions?

Buy him a musical instrument of some sort. See if you can start him on some piano lessons. Getting kids interested in music at this age is a really good thing to do. I started music around then and have made a career out of it now.

I love this idea! My kids love music and they're only 3 and 4. I can't wait until they can take lessons. Right now they have 4 play guitars between the two of them and my son drums on EVERYTHING with pencils.

He is not all that interested in music. He was when he was younger. I think my almost 2 year old daughter would be more into that.

What's he really into? Focus on getting a special gift for that; something he thought was to wild to even ask Santa for (if he still believes in Him) Don't get him just socks and underwear, unless he deserves it.

The only thing he is REALLY into right now is Ben 10 off of Cartoon Network. He has gotten about 10 of the action figures since last Christmas and the Video game for his PS2.

He has a PS2 right? Gift cards toward purchase of a few games. They have some good deals for previously used ones. That way he could get some more. As for Ben 10, they have a new dvd game out he might like. Ben 10 DVD Game This DVD game features clips from the hit Cartoon Network show Ben 10! This DVD video game lets players master the powers of 13 different aliens as you experience the action and adventure of Ben 10. And it is under $20.

How about a gift card for a local movie theater or blockbuster? Does your son have an iPod? Maybe an iTunes gift card.

No he does not have an iPod. He is obsessed with his PS2 and the computer though.

How about teaching him the value of giving. He can pull together a bunch of toys to donate and make room for new toys. Books too. I know my local library takes donations. Whenever I feel my kids aren't interested in a book I'll add it to the donation pile. The library has a book sale once a month and that's most likely where the books go. The money goes to the library then.

Most of the books can be set aside for his little sister, but not many of the toys. He is already supposed to go through his old toys and pick some to donate.

Well you could always register them for some arts and crafts program or if they like sports a sports team and tell them Santa thought they were so good this year that a toy wouldn't be enough for them! lol boy will they feel special!
