There are so many things one must need to do in order to protect himself against identity theft, like securing your self by using firewalls, secured and strong passwords, file and data encryption technicques. Those were just some methods to protect your self. You can use one of them or a combination. However, there is one thing one need to now about security. This is not well known to many... It is called the Social Engineering. Social engineering is the most dangerous branch of hacking where-in hackers themselves always falls a victim of social engineering.

Never get on your computer at a public hotspot like a coffee shop unless you encrypt your connection with a VPN. Everyhting on a wireless hotspot network is shared and for the taking. http://www.surfbouncer.com

Some ways I use to protect myself from identity theft: I never give out correct personal information on most sites. I always hang up if I get a "Hello, we are calling from ...." kind of phone calls. I immediately delete all emails from the "please I need your help", "change your PayPal password" or "you have won 1000000" kind. I never write down passwords, not on paper, nor on my PC.
