I'm in the mood for something different for dinner. Any suggestions?

What do you fix when you want something different to eat for supper? I tend to revert back to the same old things, night after night, week after week. Any suggestions for something different? It's just the two of us, but family-size suggestions are welcome, too. Thanks for your help!

There are just the two of us, so making something different isn't quite as traumatic as trying to introduce it to a family! We recently tried both butternut squash and spaghetti squash - neither of which we had eaten before, and very much liked both. It is also something that works well for two because you can purchase the size of squash that just serves two and not have a lot leftover. I recently purchased a "potato baking bag" which is actually just some cotton material made into a bag with cotton batting in the middle and it works wonderfully. I also found this website where there is a video that tells how to use the bag to cook corn and spaghetti squash: http://www.potatobakingbag.com/ I didn't buy my bag from this site and as you can see from the site, it would be very easy to make (I'm going to make some for Christmas gifts).

That is a fascinating product and I am sold! I'm more likely to buy one than make one, though I might buy one for my mother and she would make one for everyone she knows! I know she'll love it. Great alternative dinner ideas, too. I haven't had spaghetti squash in years. Thank you so much for your input!

The one I have is smaller than the one on the website - just big enough for a couple of potatoes or a small squash, but I definitely think the bigger one would be better. Now that there's just the two of us, I tend to want to spend less time in the kitchen!

The butternut squash is my favorite. I like to make it and then freeze what is left over. It freezes well, I never have tried the spagetti squash. I like the acorn squash too. It has lots of flavor to it.

I made some sausage gravy, biscuits and fried taters for dinner. I haven't had that in a long while. It sounded good, its easy and tasty. I sometimes tend to make the same things over and over too. Its nice to change things up and have a variety. I am sure you will get all kinds of good ideas. Have a good dinner.

I used to always make my country gravy from scratch. Buy lately I have been like you, I buy the mix and add the milk or water. The mixes are very good and you do make them up fresh. I really like having bacon, eggs, taters and toast for dinner, thats really good. Frozen pizza and salad is always good. Do you put some extra toppings on it. I am by myself and really have to get creative, I am used to cooking for lots of people. I don't have any special recipe, I have been cooking for so many years, I just put a little of this in, and a little of that.

I love breakfast for dinner but don't think about that often enough. Yours sounds absolutely awesome! Do you make your own gravy or use a mix? I think the packaged southern gravy mixes are actually pretty tasty and tend to turn out better than when I try to make it myself. Do you have a recipe secret you'd like to share?? I haven't fried potatoes for quite some time, either. Golly, Polly, you're making me very hungry! (I'm settling for frozen pizza with a big salad tonight. It's good pizza but . . . blah, not too exciting.)

I make what you call a hobo dinner, they are easy & really good....You need hamburger meat,an onion, maybe 2 potatoes, and some frozen mixed vegtables, and just salt & pepper.....You take a nice size piece of foil, like a square, lay it out on your counter, get as many pieces of foil as you want to make a dinner..example 2 dinners, 2 pieces of foil....Make a nice patty with your hamburger meat and put a patty on each piece of foil, then you slice your onion in a round like you are making onion rings, and place about 2 to 3 slices on top of the patty,do the same with the potato, but use more potato because they are a main ingredient, then put about a cup of mixed frozen vegetables on top of that..salt & pepper..Take the foil & bring it up at the top and mash the foil together to form a holder for your meal...So when you get done you will have 2 meals...Pop in the oven for 1 hr & 10 minutes on 375,when you take it out you have a meal in one..You have a starch,a veggie & a meat, they are delicious ..You can use your imagination about the seasoning part....

You are welcome! I fix these sometimes for guests and my late husband could eat 2 dinners in one meal..They are really good and yes adding some of your own seasoning is good too...Glad you liked it...

Now, that sounds wonderful, very easy and very flavorful. Oh, no, we won't forget the butter! I like Mrs. Dash seasonings on things like that, no added salt, and of course just some garlic powder would be wonderful with those onions. Thanks for the great suggestion and, in fact, I may do that really soon; I have a couple of hamburger patties in the freezer and all the rest of the ingredients, too. Thanks for the great suggestion!

I tend not to make the same things, and so that seldom comes up, but what we do most of the time is plan our meals around what is on sale. It is more work but such huge savings. You could say that instead of cooking what we want, we make up our minds to want what is on special. So they had an incredible deal on pork loin back ribs at the neighborhood store, really pennies on the dollar and I nuked them tender in the pressure cooker for 1/2 hour and then cooked them 15 minutes in the NuWave oven to crisp them up. They were so good we didn't even want BBQ sauce on them. We had Wally Mart's Frozen Asparagus Stir-Fry vegetables as the side, but I added mushrooms. We have noticed that just recently many stores have much nicer frozen entrees than they ever did before...whatever you want, it is already made for you and more reasonably priced of late, too. I like that! It is hard, though to suggest something different without knowing what you usually make!

Your ribs recipe sounds really, really tasty! I haven't seen the asparagus stir-fry veggies, but I'll be looking for those. I, too, have noticed a lot more nice frozen entrees lately. Funny that even though it's the two of us now, I stay very busy and depend on convenience foods much more than I used to, but I guess that's because the selections are so much better than they used to be. As for what we usually eat, I guess it's a variety, but it's still the same stuff for us. I do stir-fries, Friday night is often steak on the grill, salad, and good bread; we do things like ham slice and baked sweet potatoes or a crockpot roasted chicken, things like that. So anything just kind of "different" is a nice occasional change. Thanks for your suggestions!
