Having read a book, do you discard it?

After reading a book,do you discard it? I find it hard parting with books that I buy, specially the best sellers. I still have books that are more than ten years old in my cabinet because they are written by my best authors. I usually read them again if I have time so I don't give them away but if it is not my favorite then I give it away to other people. Having collections of my favorite authors is important to me so I make it a point to have their books kept in the cabinet.

It's difficult for me to part with a book I've bought. Like other folks here I may pass them on to someone, family or friends. Usually since many books I have are either business related or have historical reference I tend to keep them and refer to them at a later date.

I enjoy and love the books I have ,and at one stage wanted a room that was wall to wall of books but that dream seems to have faded as room is just not available plus nowadays my free time is spent reading and writing on the internet. I do still go to the library ,when I suddenly get the urge to read a book or lash out and purchase a book to add to my collection ,how-ever these days I refuse to pay full prize for them .cheers.

You do love books. I buy books from book sale. They are far cheaper.

I usually do not discard a book after reading it. I also find it very difficult to part with books that I buy. I am in the moving process and I am overwhelmed by how many boxes are full of books. My children are readers also and have the same love for books that I do. I have decided recently though to reread these books and make some decisions. I need to do some decluttering. In the staff lounge at my work there is a shelf full of books and I have decided to start contributing and borrowing from here. I will keep my favorites, the one's I know I will reread again, but the rest need to be shared.

That's hard work. I tried that too and what's harder is fixing them again in a bookshelf as son as you moved to your new house.

it all depends on the value it is incorporated with!! if it deserves to be thrown , or kept aside or kept for ever!!

I also discard books that I don't like but before buying a book I make sure it's what I want to read. And to be safe, I always look at the author's name.

Most of my books are hand me down from my sister. After reading it, she will share it to me so we can interact with the content of the book. And I still have all those books until now. Although some of it were lost because someone borrowed it and haven't returned it yet. Basically, i am a pack rat...

Hush! they might hear you talking about giving them away! i never discard any of my books, most especially my favorite authors. ok..i never discard ANY at all lol! in fact they are so precious to me that i dont let anybody borrow them either! they will just abuse them..and that will make me mad and then i will be forced to "chew them a new one" hahaha! i go back and re-read my favorites...as long as i dont remember the storyline too well..which is getting harder to do. however since im always buying books, im always finding more "favorites" to add lol!

Discarding a book is a hard thing for me. I tend to collect books. It has been a hobby shared by my husband and I for years. We enjoy visiting off the beaten path used and rare bookstores, looking for those hard to find first editions. We have a growing collection of autographed books from having attend Book Festivals over the years. I do buy some paper backs just for fun quick reads and I pass them on to a house for expectant mothers that my church supports.

Hi there! I have never discarded a book that I have read. Especially if I bought it or was given to me. I have them all intact. Though some aren't in there best condition anymore I still keep them. I also don't put them in boxes like what others do. I like them organized in a bookshelf where I can always see them and easy to reach when I want to read them again. I find it nice also to see how many I have read. Ciao!

I love looking at my favorites books too in the shelf. They look so lovely and I could always read them again if I got the time.

If the book is by one of my favorite authors, or a book I especially like, I would add it to my collection. I've got loads on my shelves - could never bear to part with them. Those that I do not want, I usually give away to charity homes - they can either use them or sell them to used bookstores.

Good idea. People could always make use of things other people don't need.

I like reading books, and I like collecting books which I like to read. I also like to lend my books to other people, but it really annoys me that some people would not return it to me or the book gets broken or dirty. I really hate that. If there is a friend who lend my book and never return or destroy my book once, then I will never lend my book to him/her again. I tread my books as my friends, they should be treaded well and protected, I cannot stand other do something bad to them. So of course I will never discard any of my books, I love them.

Some people really aren't so careful. They borrow books then tear the pages and fold them. I hate that too.

I used to buy books as anyone who visits my house could see. They are on shelf after shelf on our bookcases. In our last move 10 years ago my husband worked with me with each and every book to pitch them from here and give them to a local DAV (Disaled Vets). Since I read 1 to 2 books a month on average, over the years this was a high number of books. Just this year, rather than buy most books I read I signed up at our local library. This is a huge benefit because: 1) it saves me money; 2) I don't have to get into the collection mode again; 3) my bookshelves are filled only with what I consider to be classics and 4) when my granddaughter visits I have an activity that she loves that we can save money a second time!

I love reading and read around four to fvie books a week. When I have finished reading a book, I usually exchange the books with other like minded. Sometimes to pass it on to libraries for thm to lend to ohter people or sell it. I would never expect these books to return back to me as I get a GREATER PLEASURE FROM PASSING THEM ON TO OTHER PEOPLE. People who may enjoy them and knowing that they will in turn pass them on

I am the exact same way! :) I like to exchange books with friends and family members! :) It is also good for Libraries to receive donations! :) A good book should NEVER be thrown away! :)

Well, for me it often depends on what type of Book it is, and if it is by one of my favorite authors, etc. as well. I tend to either give a book away after I have read it, or sell it to places like 1/2 price books, or sell at one of my Yard sales, etc. Personally if a book is still in good condition it is worth trying to make a little extra back if I spent something on it for sure.

I collect books as I read them and can never bring myself to discard them. Books are very precious to me. I am an avid book lover and often spend hours reading. I read a lot of ebooks too. I do buy mainly second hand books and new books tend to be more expensive and more than I can pay most of the times

No i never discard my books. They are very precious to me, i spend a lot on books, cause i don't borrow from the library but buy my own. Sometimes among some friends we borrow from each, but i always make sure that my books are returned. I keep a log of my books that are out, and after a month that they are out i will start asking for them. I have a big collection, i think when i build my house one day i will need a big room as my library.

I definitely not discard it. Every book I read are put in a book shelf and when I have time again to reminisce those memories again, I'll read the book again. But it takes much space sometimes so I can't help but sell some other books to free space.

It is really hard keeping all the books if you have a small space.
