I just checked my calendar today and hate to inform you all but there is only six and half weeks until Christmas Eve!!
With the bad economy and everything going up in price over these last few months what are your thoughts on gift giving this year?
Will you be cutting back or changing how you give?
This discussion is actually inspired by a very dear friend of mine here!
We'd both like some cheap or free gift giving ideas...Do you have any economical and easy ways to give gifts without spending a lot of money if any?
What types of gifts will you be giving this year?
At this point, I won't be giving any except for my son and even that will be less than previous years!
We look forward to hearing from you and getting some great gift giving ideas!
Thanks in advance!

Dollar store finds will be what I will be giving, but also since someone gave me yarn, hats and a weaving.
I will also make some stuff from recycled items once I finished the hats and the weaving. Like whatever I can figure out for entrance rugs from plastic bread bags.
What are your skills? Can you weave, braid, knit, crochet, sew, glue, etc.?
What do you normally throw away? What grows in your area?
I've taken remnants or old clothes and cut them into squares, sewed them to make mini pillows and stuffed them with other pieces of clothes or leftover polyfill or milkweed fluff (down) and dried balsom needles. They make great air fresheners for chests of drawers, if you put a ribbon loop on one, it can be used in a closet. You could also do the same with a little cat nip if he has a cat.
We made pine cone ornaments with glue and glitter one year, now there is glitter glue combined and often you can get that at the dollar store. If you have pine cones, you can make tons of them, if you have any ribbon, they can be hung up.
If he was a she, jean purses would be cool. Almost anything can be made into a picture frame if you have a picture of the two of you, cardboard covered with anything including scrapbooking material, cloth, yarn, twigs, etc. Backing cardboard and front cut out so there is an open part in the middle.
Veggie net bags can be washed and used to hang soap, or crocheted or even turned a few times and they can be made into scrubbies.
Old cards, the pictures can be cut out and glued back to back to make ornaments. Old cloth and anything to stuff it with can be used to make a bigger pillow.
What do you have that you would normally throw out? What does he need?
It's hard for me to help when I don't know what you have.

Hello Writersedge!
Carmela told me you might drop by
I really do appreciate this!
If you are talking about my son, he is only five and so none of these things would be any good for him! Anyhow, I am not as worried about him because I have some stuff for him already! Who I am concerned about is my husband parents and my seventeen year old sister-in-law! None of these things would be any good for her either...I know that!
I don't know what other information I can give you...
I must say, I am not all that crafty though!

Sorry Writersedge!
My seventeen year old sister in law is into fashion and make-up very smart and very popular...Heading off to University in the fall! I can't imagine anything I made making her happy! She is the one I am most concerned about....
My parents are not wanting anything because they just bought a house and were able to down size...My Mom says she is happy with what she has!
Whoa I just had a brain wave for my parents and in-laws and it was brought on by you!
I can't share anymore here as my Mother-in-law is on here and will likely read this! As for growing things, I live in an apartment in the city and am not that great with plants anyway...Wish I was though! I may also make some drink mixes or small baskets of baked goods for other friends and family members... Something from the heart! I think I am on my way to the Dollar Store and the Bulk Store!!
Only I wish there was a way to make a seventeen year old happy without money!!!
Thanks so much, you really have helped me! You made me think of something I should have thought of on my own...I think they will be very happy!!

Glad something helped.
I had seen that a couple of people offered the premixes stuff before me. Those are great ideas. Aloe Vera, I've given that to people who live in apartments and trailors and even some that kill everything, still kept it going. I water mine every Monday. I usually kill house plants, too, but that one lives and multiplies for me to give to other people.
Here, right now, the teens are into funky scarves that can be bought at the dollar store. The ones with wild fur or eyelet yarn (stuff that is a wild color and shaggy). If you know her favorite color, that would help. Yes, teens are hard to buy for. Esp. now - a - days with all the money they seem to have, if they want it, they buy it. IPOD holders and Cell phone holders seem to be the thing if you look at Etsy Custom or Alchemy, lots of people are asking for those. If she's going to college at 17, I'm sure she is very intelligent. College students always need something. Trust me, I was one. So she is a she. Maybe if you talk to her about college, you'll get some ideas. I know when I had a roommate who bought tang and powdered lemonade for the hot days and hot chocolate ( college in the North) for the cold, I was eternally greatful for her buying that stuff and sharing it with me.
So someday let us know what sparked an idea that you had for your inlaws. I think it's better when an idea sparks another one than doing the same as a suggestiong anyway, then you can take credit for thinking of it yourself. Take care.

For opur grandkids wqe always get them an outfit or two each and a small and large toy as well.
Our own kids get what they need or want most times.
I have no idea yet as to what to get my daughter and son-in-law.
Nor do I have any ideas yet for my wife.
One thing that makes a great gift is a jar filled with the ingredients for their fave cookie or cake etc.
Then as a gift tag the directions are added. Not exspensive and from the heart as well.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yet another wonderful gift idea here, Grandpa Bob. In reference to your comment in the box above, it sometimes seems like even my dil and myself have become 'ships that pass in the night.' I hate for it to be this way, but it can be very hard for us to get our schedules coordinated.
Love and Hugs to you.

What a wonderful idea about the ingredients in a jar!! I love that idea with the recipe attached very thoughtful indeed!
Thanks so much for coming in above as well Grandpa! We live in the same city...one bus away and are lucky if we see each other once a month, often a couple months or more pass before we actually have a face to face visit...it is sad really! Schedules mess us up quite often even for phone conversation....Maybe once every couple of weeks...ridiculous I know! I've not been on here much of late what with looking for a better job and helping my parents move, it has been very busy for me as well and then she has been busy with her daughter's search for Universities...Such is life for us right now!

I started baking cookies today. I will bake bread and make candy and fill containers. We have a large family and Its hard to buy for everyone. I would rather use my cooking skkills to cook because I know they will all be hungry and enjoy munchin on goodies. I baked 12 dozen cookies today and made chocolate pretzels and I will do more tomorrow.@heavenschild (4777)

Mint Chocolate Fudge by any chance
I love to bake also but have been so busy that I have not started yet and I think I'll be doing crafts this year instead of shopping....No money for shopping this year as my son's therapy takes up so many funds....
I have to be creative which is why I started this discussion and have gotten a few good ideas here also!
Thanks so much for dropping by and sharing your plans of holiday gift giving with me!

I know all about boxing day, I am Canadian also!
Unfortunately that never works out for me as we are4 with family still that day and also, My son's therapy takes all of our money and so I would not be able to do that anyway! I bought a few small throughout the year but it is not near enough! I'm not very crafty in that I don't crochet or knit or anything like that but I do have a couple of ideas now!

Well, most of the ideas that I had have already been given here. Check the dollar stores as they have some nice gifts for everyone. I believe that the 17 year old girl would like the cozy(fuzzy) socks or gloves that are at the store. I seen matching hats, gloves, and a scarf the other day. That would be a $3.00 gift that is a great idea! I hope you find something for her!

I'm not sure if she would or not, she is on her way to University in the fall!
I'm thinking it would be nice for her to have some pictures of us in some form as she is going away and we will not see her...this way she can take her nephew with her so to speak or something like that!!! Not for sure on this but it is one idea I have for her!
Thanks so much!

Do you do any crafts? I am making some scrapbooking displays for some family members, two small travel albums for my grandmothers (hopefully I'll get this done), hand stamped marble tiles that can be used as coasters or they can be displayed on a small stand. I know it's hard. I just picked up a number of shirts at Wal-Mart for a $1 each and $3 Hannah Montana pajamas for my daughter that I will be saving to give her. I'm not a big fan of Hannah, but I am a fan of the price.

Hi Minnie! It is so great to see you!
How is every one doing?
I have made baskets also in the past but they too can get quite costly I find depending on what you put in them!
I am sorry to have to ask this but what is Black Friday? I have never hear of it!

Thanksgiving is the third Thursday in the States (USA), the following day is called Black Friday. That is the day that people go crazy shopping. With any luck, it will be the first day of a really, really good holiday shopping season and the stores will be "in the black" as opposed to "in the red," which would be negative numbers. People usually line up early and go crazy trying to get to cheap items first before they're all sold out. My husband and I stay home those days because it's crazy. Take care.

I like giving food gifts, that is something that is hard to go wrong with. I go to a catalog place and send both of my brothers these breakfast gifts so that on Christmas morning they can have a nice breakfast and it doesn't cost them a dime.
I always like food...everyone has to eat.

That's neat Deb! I always liked to give something that they would have something to show of it but it is true that we all have to eat!
My problem this year is that there will be no gifts for anyone if I have to spend much money!

Hi heavens,
You've already received some great ideas here, and you have some good ones of your own too. I love the types of homemade gifts that are mentioned. I've done gift baskets of my own in the past, and they're always a hit. They can be as expensive, or 'inexpensive' as you wish. I like the idea of the filled tins too. One year, my daughter made her own little felt pillows for friends. They were really pretty. She personalized them with sequins etc., and stuffed them with old socks. These types of gifts, made with great love and care, are often the best ones (to me.)
By the way, I've also added a comment to Writersedge's response.
Love and Hugs to you.

Hi Mom!
I wish I still had time to sew because pillows would be nice for a couple of people I think, however I don't know if I would have time for that! When I was your daughters age or maybe a little younger I took old jeans and cut them into equal sized squares and made pillows that I stuffed cotton balls that my Mom let me use!
Anyhow, I responded to you under Wtritersedge...
Hopefully we can talk soon! I have a really light work week coming up! Just three shifts!
Love and Hugs

I think it's great when people are able to make these sorts of gifts. It's especially commendable for kids to do so, as it really showcases their creativity, and desire to give to others, even while on a budget.

+As for gift giving, I look all through the year and when I come across something that is marked down or on clearenace and i know someone that would like it, I buy it. It gives you the whole year to buy and not have to rush the last few weeks to find gifts for friends and family. I was in local grocery some weeks back and they had these electric tea kettles on a close out for $2.50, really nice, so I bought 3, one for a friend, one for my son's girlfriend and one for my daughter. I seen the same one's in another store for $15.95 a piece. They have auto shut offs and hold a quart of water. If it wasn't for finding these kinds of gifts we wouldn't have Christmas. We are on a fixed income and after bills there isn't much left.

Thanks bdugas I did do a bit of that throughout the year but not enough....
when I went to my closet to see what I had most of it was for my son and now I am afraid I will have nothing for my in laws or any others I generally give to!!!!
This year has been particularly tight because of my son's therapy costs and now I know there won't be much of a Christmas!!

All I want is for my Son to have a good Christmas and His seventeen year old Aunt and then I need more funds so that I can continue my Son's therapy...that is more important to me then anything!!!!
A long as we get together as a family and have a meal I don't need any gifts for me!
