I am a big football fan and I really hate when anybody calls rugby as football. For instance I was looking for some football videos on the internet and I found 2 - 3 websites where under football section Rugby videos were uploaded. And I also saw on T.V and in some movies that people call rugby as Football! It's really annoying that you call a non-sense game as football, even though players barely use their foot in the whole game. I don't like to compare one sports with another. But if one mentions Rugby as football, comparison is worth mentioning. Football is a no doubt 'The beautiful game', a person needs a lot of skills, physical and mental ability to play it. You need vision to play this game whereas in rugby game is stopped a million times you get plenty of time to think and u have to hold the in your hands and other players jump over you. It's no way near the real football. So, whats your take on this, all Football lovers please share your views.

How narrow minded can you be?? What does it matter what the game is called! As for the skills etc a person needs to play football, you forgot to mention, rolling about on the floor anytime someone comes even near them, being dramatic at any occasion, setting a bad example to children with their disregard for the ref etc etc. Do you not think that a rugby player requires mental ability to be in a scrum in the first place? If you lost your narrow mindedness and actually watched a game of rugby, Im sure you would find it a lot more interesting than watching a ball being kicked about a field for 90 mins with no goals. Oh and a point for consideration, why do you think football is played by the pub yobs and rugby is played, in general, by more educated men?

It's not about narrow mindness, it's about rational view. What's the point in calling Rugby 'football' when you virtually don't use your feet. And moreover a 0-0 draw in a game of Football can be very entertaining and tactically very consuming. I won't like to compare the nature of the sports but surely don't like when people call Rugby as 'Football' and actual 'Football' as Soccer, even though it's official that Football can not be called Soccer. It's frustating to see over the internet term soccer or when you open a link under 'football' content related to rugby pops out. I am against those nerds who are spreading this term as a pest.

I could care less. You lost all cred when you called Rugby a non-sense game. It`s not non-sense to those who play. I know people who call the so call beautiful game a girls game for all the acting they do on the pitch. The point I am making if you don`t like it don`t watch. But they can call it what they want at the end of the day it`s their sport.

Well, you are not getting the point. What is the significance of calling Rugby as Football even though the ball is kept in hands for most of the time, and calling Football as soccer because some people already labeled Rugby as Football, it is very confusing! Imagine if you like Hockey and I Table Tennis then I start calling it as Hockey, and give some other name to T.T and then start promoting table tennis by the name hockey then wont' you feel irritating! And today there no such thing like 'their game', most of the games in the world are played in every country.

Rugby is officially called Rugby Football, maybe for the people that follow Rugby the most, they use football to describe it. Americans call American football "Football", and call what the rest of the world calls football "Soccer". I think that's OK, as long as they use it in their own circle. When talking to a non-American, it creates confusion. Even on this site, the interest called "Football" is flooded with American Football topics, and the football discussions have to be carried on in the "Soccer" interest I tried for a while to post football discussions in the "Football" section, but I had to move to the "Soccer" interest because my discussions were lost among the American Football ones. I wouldn't criticize Rugby, every sport has its own beauty, recently I'm starting to get the meaning of it, and I think it's a very good sport. There are many to discuss on this topic, I hope my response has been coherent . Cheers!

That's my point, through internet and media people are facing kind of problem you faced and are forced to accept and mention 'Football' as "soccer". For some people this thread might appear absurd, but it's more than just a name game. It's about retaining the identity of The Beautiful game for the generations to follow. I know all the real Football fans got it.

Unfortunately the official name of rugby union is rugby football union, just as there is other sports such as American Football and Australilan Rules Football. Whilst in general I find football a more enjoyable sport to watch than rugby I have seen some fantastic games of rugby and some dire games of football. Different sports but both can be beautiful and ugly

Rugby Union follows from football. 1871 William Web Ellis, while playing football, picked up the ball and ran with it. The original title was created in that same year as "Rugby Football Union" The title was only truncated as a result of the settng up of "rugby league" Having said my piece I do agree with you!

I hate to be a nuisance but the idea that rugby stops and starts is a little unfair because rucks, mawls and scrums are the essence of the game. I remember the great England team which won the Web Ellis Trophy,it was a joy to watch the players group and through the creation of a ruck gave Jonny Wilkinson to kick drop goals.
