WHY do they ask for a renewal before you ever get the magazine?

I buy subscriptions to a couple magazines on occasion..not yearly just when i have the money to order through the schools magazine campaign.
This fall I ordered PC world at the end of September. The subscription usually starts around Christmas time this way. I got a renewal notice in the mail yesterday for my magazine and JUST bought the subscription and haven't even gotten the magazine yet. WHY do they do this? Its happened before with other magazines they start reminding you to renew before you ever get the magazine you paid for.
Why? Has this happened to you before?

Is something wrong with your postal service? If not I would contact the magazine office and try to sort out what is the problem. If they have been sent or not.

It happens to me all the time - the only thing I can think is that they are trying to make as much money as possible through people who don't realize how long it has or has not been since they renewed, etc. I have also given gift subscriptions before along with mine and gotten a piece attached to the magazine asking if I'd like to give a gift subscription. Ugh. It drives me insane, but I guess they've got to make their money, too, and someone out there probably falls for it.
