On the way home today from work, even though it was a god awful looking sky above me...it looked like snow ugh), I felt happy. It was because I really like the state I live in. I know this sounds stupid, but not really. It was one of those personal character development moments...okay I do tend to dive deep mentally on occassion.
Anyhow here's why this is revealation is so important to me. Whenever I meet someone and they ask where I am from I always tell them I am from Chicago and grew up in Kentucky. Chicago is a very important part of me because anyone who is from this lovely windy city will agree...whether you were born there, live there or have ever lived there it gets into you blood. There is a certain vibrancy about this city that never sleeps. And each and every time when I enter the city limits on the Dan Ryan expressway I cannot help but smile and just take in the beauty of this city and the old buildings and houses that look like they should be on Sesame Street. Well, this is my Chicago and will always be in my soul.
And because I grew up in Kentucky I have grown fond of it somewhat. But as a kid I always wanted to move back to Chicago. So I went to college just outside the city and then moved back to Kentucky. That's been exactly 8 years ago next month since I left my wonderful city. And I have always said that when my parents are gone I am moving back to Chicago. Well, today I realized something.
I love Kentucky. I love it in the Fall with the burnt orange and sparkling yellow leaves gracing the highways and neighborhoods. I love the fact that on any given Sunday morning the drive to work or anywhere is relaxed because everyone is at home or somewhere other than on the street. I love the fact that they call it rush hour when actually it is only about 30 minutes tops...and that's with maybe sitting still in traffic for 15 minutes. I love how the summer's are hot and the grass is so green and the fact that even though developments are going up right and left they have the decency to leave some nature in place. I love the smell of rain in the Spring because it is so clean and the trees come alive over night. I love the winter nights when it is so cold outside you brave it to stare at the bright stars that you never seem to notice in the bigger cities.
So it was on this drive home today where I realized that I have always acknowledged my Kentucky roots, usually in a joking manner by my saying that I am only half-in bred (and I am not in bred at all people it is a joke) because my parents are from two states and I have had the pleasure of living in both great states. But i really do love this state. And I can see me living here for a long time or like I said moving back up North.
Have you ever been to Kentucky? What did you think of it? Were people friendly or not? What time of year was it?
