epilepsy in dogs.

I was aware that certain breeds of dogs are prone to have epilepsy. That seemed so strange to me that a dog would have seizures. I have a friend who has a blond colored retreiver, and she was saying that her dog is on medication for epilepsy. She just moved to a new apartment and is thinking of giving the dog up, but her concern in doing that is the dog's illness. Have you ever heard of epilepsy in dogs?

Dogs can get many of the things that people can get. Epilepsy, thyroid issues, cancer, glaucoma, diabetes, just to name a few. If your friend is wanting to give her dog up, make sure that the new owners are aware of the dogs illness, and how to care for the dog. Typically phenobarbitol is prescribed for epilepsy, and make sure the new owners can handle the expense of the medication as well as the responsibility to give the medication.

Thank you for your response. My friend did mention that the dog needs medication every twelve hours. I asked her to try to train the dog so that she won't feel the need to get rid of her. the dog is five years old, and they really do not want to deal with her in their new apartment, she is a beautiful dog.

Yes years ago (like 30 years) my uncle had a dog a beagle mix named Hero. he used to have epilepsy- I was just a kid then and didn't even know what it was. but I remember feeling sorry for the dog. My roommate used to have a cat with it too and needed a pill everyday to control seizues.

Yes, we used to raise cocker spaniels when i was a kid and we kept one pup (had it fixed) because she had epilepsy. It was quite scary to see the little pup having seizures - the first time it happened my mom thought she was choking. In the end a friend of my moms fell in love with her and took her home and she had her for about 10 years before she passed away.
