Dear friends, I have a female puppy which is only 5 weeks old. Since last week, I have noticed that there are white flakes all over her black fur. I tried to rub it off, and seems it is getting so much to get rid off. I have tried to take her for a speedy bath hopefully all the white flakes can be washed off. There are less flakes now but still not completely clean. What is happening to my puppy? Anybody have any idea how to cure it?

I would have to say that in order to get rid of dandruff you have to go from the inside out. What I mean by that is it is what you can feed your puppy to make th dandruff go away. I have been taught by a very very good breeder that oils are an excellent way to get rid of dandruff. Any type of oil is good for their skin and coat. I myself have been known to put a bit of beef grease on their regular food, also peanut butter has some good oils in it for dogs. I hope that this helps.

Thank you for the information. I have read somewhere online saying that giving some olive oil or omega-3 in the puppy's food will help too.

What kind of food are you feed your puppy? She might be allergic to something in the food. I suggest feed a higher quality brand of food or even switching to a RAW diet if the vet scrapes do not come up with anything. I have one dog that gets really bad itchy dry skin if we feed him anything with corn, beef, or chicken in it.

I am giving the puppy a mixture of puppy dried food and her mother's milk. I will try to give the puppy better food and observe if her condition improve.

I'm not sure what the temperatures are like where you're at, but here it's cold outside so we have the heat on- that tends to dry out a dogs skin more than usual. When you talk to your vet, ask about giving your dog a vitamin E supplement (get dosage from vet)- it works for my boys when they get a little dry skin.

Pet scoops is a website that could help you with this if you have time to check it out. There is dog shampoo out there for dandruff also if you check the pet stores... I'm sure you will find some.
