Do you eat veal?

While growing up my mom was opposed to eating veal. Many people are. People feel it's inhumane what happens to the baby cows that are killed to provide us with veal. So far as I know, I've only ever had veal once. It was at a dinner party when I was 16 years old. I didn't know what it was when I ate it. I haven't had it since, for many reasons. Do you eat veal? Are you morolly opposed to eating veal? Tell me your thoughts.

I do not eat veal either. I also had a mom who wouldn't eat it. I know that all meat comes from animals and obviously all animals are slaughtered to get it. But calves are penned in such a way that they can't move. Muscle tone would cause their meat to be tough. They are fed an iron poor diet in order to keep them anemic which (supposedly) also contributes to the tenderness of the meat. That is no way for any animal to live! I agree with you.

I never said I was personally opposed to it. These animals are breed for feeding purposes, not as pets. Most of them are culled within days of their birth. The longest they live is about 35 weeks, that's less than 9 months.

Sorry that I misunderstood about your not eating it. But I do think that being unable to move for 9 months is an exceptionally looooooong time. Can't say I've ever tried it.

I had veal one time when I was about 14 years old. My Mother's aunt and uncle had a restaurant in Chicago and we went to visit. They served us veal and it was NOT good! I've never wanted any since.

From my memory of veal, I didn't think it was anything spectacular. It wasn't awful, but wasn't all that great either. But of course I feel the same way about prime rib.. just tastes like pot roast to me.

Prime Rib is my favorite! But it tastes nothing like pot roast to me. The best I can remember about the veal is that it had a completely different taste of anything I had ever eaten, and it wasn't tender.

we have it very rarely. my hubbys family is German and so schnitzel is a huge thing (its made with veal) but i think we have made it once and have had it at a restaurant a half a dozen times or so. what is the difference between killing a baby cow and killing an adult cow?

I think it's the way the baby cows are killed. I've honestly never looked into it or researched it or anything, I just know my mom was opposed to it. I haven't had it mostly because I can't find it, and it's expensive.

My mom lived on a farm and said there was no difference. That does not mean that these huge places didn't do what they were accused of back in the day, but I find it hard to believe that would happen in this day.

I have never had veal before. I guess I have never even been offered it before so I have never had it. I don't know if I would eat it or not. I do eat hamburger and steaks and things like that though I guess I always thought veal was lamb or somthing.

Veal is a baby cow, specifically younger than 9 months old. Actually they are surplus male dairy calves. A male dairy bull's only purpose is to mate to create more dairy cows, so they don't need a lot of them, so the male calves are used as veal. They're fed specific diets and kept in pens until they're culled.

I have never tried veal and I have never fancied trying it either, not because of the animal it comes from but simply because it just does not appeal to me at all. I think if someone was to put it front of me and tell me to try it without me knowing what it was then I would.

I only ever had it the once, but I don't remember there being anything special about it. It tasted much like a tender beef roast. But that's just me, I didn't notice anything special about prime rib either.

I know people find veal to be inhumane... I'm not exactly sure why. I know it is young cattle but... these animals are raised for eating right? I think it is delicious. I had it a couple of times at my favorite Italian Restaurant in Little Italy, in Cleveland. They have an amazing veal dish. I don't eat it very often though.

It's the way the calves are kept. They're penned up by themselves, not able to move or excersize, and are fed particular diets that make the meat taste better. People think that is inhumane to treat the animals that way. However, many of the calves breed for veal are culled within days of their birth, others within a couple months. The longest a veal calf will live is about 9 months.

I'm vegetarian so I'm opposed to eating any kind of animal. The way most of them are raised and slaughtered is horrible and inhumane.

I have eaten veal before. I have not had it in a long time. I honestly don't see how eating veal is any different then eating beef. One way or another and animal has to be killed.

That is true. My mom thought it was cruel to eat veal, but I've never looked into what happens when the baby cows are killed, so I'm not sure if there is a difference other than age.

I eat veal, I love it. I do not feel that it is any more inhumane than eating any kind of meat.

I love veal and haven't had it for years. It's very expensive. I know lots of people are against it but not me. It is delicious. I remember my grandmother preparing veal cutlet when I was a kid. She bought the veal at the local butcher who bout the veal from a local farm. The beast veal I ever ate.
