When my kids were ready for baby food my pocket book wasn't quite ready. But I had a great vegetable steamer on hand and a blender. That's all I needed... that and some frozen veggies from the store. The great thing about steaming foods: save on the cost of a jar of baby food, provides an abundance of vitamins and flavor to your baby, you know what's going into the food. Now, you COULD just boil veggies and mash them up but then you're removing vitamins from the vegetables. There's no way you want to do that with a little one. My favorite veggies were carrots and broccoli. These were my kid's favorites as well. When the kids are ready, you can even do rice and chicken in the steamer. I would use frozen vegetables OR fresh depending on what I wanted to steam. I peel and steam the entire package of fresh carrots until pretty mushy. They'll go into the blender so don't worry about them being too soft. Then I put them in the blender and gradually add mom's milk to the carrots until a pure forms. If you use formula, go ahead and mix some of that up and use that as your liquid. Water will do as well, but I like the idea of adding the mom's milk or formula for the added nutrition. I recommend doing a couple different vegetables on the same day then freeze half and store half in the refrigerator. If you have baby jars already, you could store some of this food in there if you want to portion it out or if you want to take some with you on an outing. BUT be sure you keep everything refrigerated or frozen until you're ready to use it because it will spoil. Many moms know that, but I wanted to be sure to mention it for any moms that may not know. I have a wonderful steamer in my store that allows you to steam many different veggies at the same time to save on your valuable time as a mother. That is a fabulous idea! I wish some one would have told me to do that when my daughter was eating babyfood. Being a young mother, I did what most young mothers would do, which is just do exactly what the doctor tells you to do with your child. Your method of babyfood provides a beter source of vitamins, and I think would help a child gain the aquired tastes for certain vegetables. I am going to pass your tip on to my girl friends who have small children, and those whoa re pregnant.
