Very disappointed with Oranges

I purchased a bag of naval oranges this past week that were on sale. It was a 4lb bag of oranges and after carefully looking them over I found the bag that I thought was the best. Most of the oranges were still a bit green on the ends. I picked the bag that was the best all the way around. The oranges were firm and did not have as much green on them. I bought them home and let them sit for a bit hoping the green ends would turn to orange. I tried to eat one and it was very bad, almost juice less. I ended up giving the oranges to my duck and to the compost pile. I was disappointed. Anyone else have a problem with oranges lately?

Yes that is true. I have also noticed that. It is a very effective way of tricking us into buying the product. I find this happens quite a bit with potatoes especially! Thanks for your input.

Hmm not sure exactly what a Durian is. Is it a type of orange or a different fruit all together? Thanks for replying!

Yes this is true. It seems that in the last few years we have had several things going on with our food productions. A problem with bananas, lemons and now oranges. It is a scary thought. I am all for producing your own if you can. Thanks for the comment and Happy MyLotting!

Why don't you grow them up yourself :) I always try to buy the orange ones and avoid the greenish ones. © ronaldinu 2008

I would love to have all sorts of fruit trees! I am working in that direction. Would have to move the citrus trees into a green house during the winter months though. Possibly I could grow the small lemon or lime trees here, not sure about an orange tree. I wish!

Yes vitamin C is very important for us all. I do take some supplements and thank you for the link. The orange would have just tasted so very good!

When an orange is juice less , you can try to put them in the microwaveoven for 10-20 seconds (no more). So, the orange get more juice. But the taste no, if the orange has bad taste, there is no way to improve.

Thank you for that bit of information. I have never thought of that. Very interesting. I will have to give it a try if it happens again. Thank you so very much!

I get aggravated when the oranges start to mold. You sort through the bags to find the best one to purchase and when you get them home they almost immediately start to spoil. Sometimes we have purchased a bag of oranges and they are so sour that you can't eat them.

I do not like the bitter tasting oranges. I have had this happen once before a long time ago as well. It is very irritating to get home and have this happen. Next time I will return the bag.

I haven't had any issues with oranges in particular lately but I do get annoyed when fruit or vegetables I buy look so tempting on the outside, yet are a complete disappointment on the inside. I find this especially with apples actually and they look really shiny and feel very crisp yet when I get the home and try one, they are all chalky and bland. Anyway, there is no word in the English language that rhymes with ORANGE, so how can you possibly trust a fruit that has no word that rhymes with its name??

Yes I have found recently that apples are also not as good myself! I really do want to go to the local farmers market and purchase some locally grown apples. It is that time of the year again here. Hehe I never thought of the fact that orange does not rhyme with anything.

I just bought some very delicious oranges. I am sorry for your bad experience but then again...I am so glad that it was just oranges that spoiled your day.

Thank you, I was going for that delicious taste of a wonderful sunny orange! I love them and I had not had one in a while due to the prices. I come across a great price and I thought I would be in orange heaven. Oh well, I will try again.

I haven't eaten any oranges since last spring, but I did just buy a small package of organic oranges yesterday (I might have to try one tonight to see if I have the same problem) I had all but stopped eating apples. They looked great and were very juicy, but had little taste...until I tried an organic apple. They aren't as big as the other apples in the store, nor are they as red. They are just as juicy, but the taste is outstanding! They are very sweet and full of flavor. I know there is an economical squeeze affecting almost everyone, but if you can find an extra dollar or two, treat yourself to organic fruit. The apples are almost addicting, the bananas are great and the grapes are very sweet and juicy. I'll give the oranges a try after dinner to see how they taste.

I would love to switch to all organic food. I will try that the next time I go fruit shopping. Even if it is just a small amount at one time. I need to eat healthier and be more aware of what is going into my body. Thanks for the input.

that is what happening when you buying in supermarket which selling a packet... like a packet of pens, apples, etc... most of the time when i bought a packet of pens contain 5 pens, only 2-3 pens can be used, the rest no ink! kinda hate that but it's cheap.. sigh

Oranges are definetly not somethign you would want to buy in bulk. I'm from Florida and eat oranges constantly and whenever I buy them from the bag they're aren't juicy and tend to go bad waaaay before theirm time. If I were you pick a handful of really good ones instead of a mediocre bag full. This way you know exactly you are getting. It might be cheaper to buy the bulk but at the end of the day the more expensive one will be eaten instead of the compost pile.

Yes that is true as well. Normally I do buy the individual ones but we have been in such a money crunch lately. I will not be buying a bag of oranges again anytime soon. I will stick to the loose ones.

They were sitting out. I have never put my oranges in the fridge. I let them sit a couple of days and the green went away then I ate one. Yuck! I should have taken them back to the store. Lesson learned.

I haven't really bought any lately b/c they are so expensive. I did buy a bag of what they call Tangelos here...very small oranges and they were so tart we couldn't hardly eat them. Hubby managed to eat them though b/c he wouldn't throw them out. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I usually buy oranges from costco. But last time I had a very bad experience like yours. So this time I didn't buy oranges from costco rather I bought from a local fresh vegetable and fruits stall. They gave a sample too. It was good. So I bought 2 lbs. But most of it were not good and juiceless.

I always like the way the fresh loose oranges look and smell but the bagged ones are so much cheaper. I will be very careful as to what oranges I get the next time.

I havent bought a bag of oranges this year. I have seen a decline in the banans we get. The color is just not like bananas used to be. I think more of the foods are grown in a greenhouse and that loses the flavor, etc from the sun itself!! I know that is true with the tomatoes you get that are green house grown.

I love oranges and I am very disappointed in those. I have not had any bananas in a while. I need to pay a visit to the produce isle.

I got some oranges here in the Uk. They where not green at the ends, but they did not taste very nice. My daughters did not eat them and I had to throw them away. I have had a lot of problems with other fruit lately too. I bought apples that where bad in a day and some grapes that did not taste good either. Can fruits be out of season in different countries we are buying them from or is it just mast produce rubbish we are buying? I do think something is up with the fruit. I am glad you have brought this up.

Yes it seems that several different fruits are not so great. I have been disappointed in oranges and apples this year.
