People are so heartless... what would you do if a HOSPITAL took your baby?!

A hospital refuses to give a new mother her baby because she couldn't pay the hospital bills! Read this article and give your opinion... http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Belgrade_hospital_refuses_to_return_baby_to_mother I put this under people because it shows how humanity has no compassion. Okay she couldn't pay in a lump sum but to prevent her from seeing her child except for once AND forbidding her to breastfeed her baby!! This is a hospital, not a department store! No payment no merchandise! This is a baby... GOD...

I'm glad I'm canadian, since we don't really need to pay for our hospital bills. Sucks to hear about that though. Maybe the father and other people in the family could help them out. A baby NEEDS their mother... Where has the world gone wrong now? :P

Exactly lifeguru a baby needs it's mom. It infuriating reading something like this that a hospital was allowed to do this. Well that is something that came to mind... why didnt anyone from her family come and help her out since the hospital was so merciless... good point.

Yeah, our hospital stuff is free, but the doctors take a hell of a long time since some people purposly want to get injured (some of the homeless), and stay in a hospital for a free meal rather than a shelter (in some cases)...

Well you have to understand this is Serbia we are talking about. Im sure something like that cant happen in western countries, but this is a country which was in war few years ago so im sure their legal system is not at the level as somewhere else. I dont know how war and living in such country can affect human nature but im sure it does. People have seen so many horrible things that their compassion can get questionable some times. But saying that, Serbians are known as very hospitable nation in the past and also now...but the poverty and the situation in the past must have left some consequencies on people's behaviour.

Well of course I agree with you they should have let it, no question about it. It is a child,a baby!! Im just saying that what might seem horrible to us and not understandable, might not affect them the same way. I mean if you see some countries where children are basicly soldiers we all feel sorry for them and cant understand that but to them its kind of normal, which is really scary to even think as its normal because it is not. But our reaction and horror is different then what they feel about it.

I'm shocked! This would never happen in America. I don't think it would happen in a lot of countries. There are many things wrong with our world, but denying a mother her child because of money issues is at the top of the list of inhumane acts. I'm appalled. Hopefully this article will draw attention that will get enough people talking to demand a change.

I'm pretty sure in the US that would be against the law. It should be in Belgrade too!

OMGS! I thought this kind of thing had been abolished. What jerks and other stronger words one doesn't use in polite company. Years ago, in the USA, they used to do this too. My Grandpa had to drive up to Los Angelas and pay for me because my parents couldn't afford the bill. Then he was allowed to take me out of the hospital. Apparently they did allow my Mum to spend time with me though. Thinking about this, doesn't this equate to Third Degree Kidnapping? And...when I was studying law all those years ago...Extortion. Wow, a hospital involved in Extortion and Third Degree Kidnapping!

My mind is still trying to process it as a reality. I think my Mummy Instincts are too strong to believe people would do such a thing. My heart goes out to the Mum.

It really is horrifying... to think that a hospital could do something like that and it not be considered illegal! Think if she didn't get her story to the press, would she have gotten her baby?!? =( As a previous responder said, a baby NEEDS his/her mom. You'd think a hospital would know that.
