Hi n30wing, I think that the best way to make a partition is to creating with Partition Magic, you should create a partition for your OS, about 30 GB for XP or Vista, 4GB for SWAP if you will use linux, 20GB for your linux instalation, and the rest you should use it for keeping importand data, or any other data that is not part of any operating system or application installed in your computer..

I usually make partitions during setup/format. I uses partition magic if i am just going to add partition to an existing system. Thanks

Hi, Yup three partition would be nice. One for OS (about 30-40Gb), one for temporary saving place (well dump all your download here, or perhaps your working document files) (about 60-70Gb) and one for what you think it is worth to safe (movie documents, and etc structured well in folder for long term backup about 150GB) Well I hope I got such harddisk. Mine is 80Gb, I put it in 3 partition. OS is 30Gb. Working files 10Gb and long term storage 40 Gb. not much and i think I need that 250 Gb hard disk

Hi there. I was planing to buy a 250 GB drive to. I would suggest around 60 or 100 GB for your main partitionthat will have your OS installed on it and 150~190 for the second one. But I am only saying that because thats how I usually partition my drives. You could be totally fine with just 30GB for your OS partition if you don't plan on installing anything that takes up a lot of spaces like some programs or video games. That you could make two more partitions for your files. Well it really depends on your needs. I was actually a bit chocked last week when I found out that one of my 160 GB HDD's is dieing. I hope that this wont happen to your new hard disk drive.

That's great! I also would have 3 partitions as what you guys suggested. That scenario also happens to one of my officemates, he had his HD crashed due to same reason, he didn't notice that his HD is already full. Good thing we did recovered his files .

Hi n30wing, You better make 3 paritions, 1. for installing OS and other applications (30GB is really huge enough for this) 2. for fun and entertainment (150GB for music and movies) 3. for things you really feel it as very important (70GB is really personal important informations)

There is no ideal partition size. And it depends on the operating system that you are using and also the sizes of the softwares, that you want to install in your computer. Typically, Vista operating system needs more partition size compared with XP. In Linux, we can use the default file allocation system. Typically we need high partition size for operating system drive. I had the same 250 GB hard disk and I made them to five equal partitions and none of them are not filled up to 50%. Thank You.
