Someone started a discussion of food for thanksgiving and said that they did not like sweet potatoes, (Was it you Lilybug?) It wasn't my favourite dish either until I discovered that if you crush/mash it using orange juice and a little sugar and butter then it is magnificent. Has anyone tried it this way?

I hate to tell you that I grew up on canned sweetpotatoes. I love them though. We usually put brown sugar on them while they are cooking on the stovetop. Then, of course we eat them with lots of butter.
I have not tried the orange juice. That sounds interesting.
There is a really decadent recipe out there somewhere that uses pecans, brown sugar and coconut baked on top. I've had it once. Heavenly! I think I saw a similar recipe in a magazine awhile back. The calories were astronomical (gastronomical?hahaha)!

You are so funny! I think that the recipe sounds delicious but this sort of food should only eaten on special occasions. and whilst eating it - if anyuone even mentions the word calories then either give them a pil for cholesterol or push them out of the house!

Yes, it was me! I have never liked them. My daughter loves them though. I can just wash one up and throw it in the oven whole and bake it for about 45 minutes for her. She loves it that way. My mom says it is because baking it like that gives it kind of a caramelized taste.1 person likes this

I have baked then when I had al the family hoime but had to serve it with some kind of meat or gravy. They are so rich in fibre and an excellent source of nutrition for your baby girl.

No, I have not tried sweet potatoes that way, but then again, I've never eat much of any dish that had sweet potatoes in it. I'm one of the ones that does not enjoy sweet potatoes at all. I've always felt that if I had them in the right dish, then maybe I'd enjoy the flavor. If cooked right, they can be oh so healthy for us. My mom loves sweet potatoes, but it seems even she only eats them around holiday time. Is that something most people do? Just eat sweet potatoes around the holidays?

Where I live, we eat them when in season. I'm asking all of you who responded to try it with orange juice and sugar and then let me know if you like it. Just a little dish on the side at Tanksgiving? Yo could make your regular dish and then do a littel sidh with the orange juice.
