What would you do if you win 5 million dollars from a lottery?

I know you would jump up and down with total joy but what are you going to do with the money? Will you travel the world? Share it with family? Buy a new house? A car? Invest it? Donate it? What? Me? I would most probably invest the money but I sure will go travel first to Switzerland with my family! Oh yeah! BUT!!!! I need to buy a lottery ticket first. lol I've never bought one in my whole life:D

After losing my voice from screaming with excitment...lol. I would probably save a majority of the money to live on. I would buy a new car as mine is falling apart and house so I wouldn't have to rent anymore and my dog could have a yard. I'd probably buy some things for my close family(parents and sibling) and I have always dreamed of going to Paris so I'd love to make a trip there with a money.

well I would probably faint but after getting up off the floor i would lock myself away or go away somewhere by myself to think what i was going to do...I would give a lot to animal charities and help some people i know that could do with a bit of a lift then I think i would like to put on good concerts for people and pay the musicians well which they are not used to, and in this promote local unsigned talented artists..

I would invest it in a business. Money goes fast. yeah 5 million is alot, but you wou be surprised at how fast it goes. I would invest in a business so that I would have more of it to do the things I want. I don't buy lottery tickets either. If I never buy one then I can't lose. I'm always a winner (in my head).

Wow!!! Good Job Gicolet for coming out with such an interesting topic. I have a feeling this is going to be a very popular topic for a very long time as I believe everyone of us would have dream/fantasies about winning the lottery at some point of our lives... especially when the bills, mortgages, loans, etc starts to creep into our lives. Well, the funniest part about all the replies so far is 'most of the reply here don't seems to be very detail or specific'. After all, we are talking about a 5 million dollars here and each and everyone of us REALLY DO have a chance of winning the lottery (provided you do buy tickets... hehehe) So here is what I'm gonna do: 1) I WILL NOT let anybody (aside from my best friend and hubby) knows about me winning the lottery 2) I AM GONNA live my life as per normal so that I can have the time to plan on how to use the money in the most efficient manner. 3) I will most probably let my family(parents and siblings) knows about a much smaller lottery winning amount so that I can pay back my debt to them and at the same time a bit more as gift. 4) I AM STILL GONNA live my life as per normal so as not to alert other ppl abt my winnings. 5) Bills will be instantly cleared 6) Mortgage will be cleared at a slightly faster than before time frame 7) Purchases may be just a little bit more but still on a low profile way (get a decent family car, change a few of the older furniture and fittings, etc.) 8) Split the balance money into 3 portion namely Life Expenditure, Income Generating and Backup Cash 9) Life Expenditure Money will be use to buy a suitable annuity so that I can have a fixed amount every month. 10) Income Generating Money will be further diversified into different investment like Houses for rental income, Business in my current company, investment in foreign currency, shares, mutual fund, Managed fund by my sister, etc... 11) Finally Backup Cash Money is as per the name implies as backup to help out families, friends, some charitable association, etc... The biggest problem about money is, when u have a lot and let others know about it.... let's just say "Money can be the roots of all evil" I do not want insincere friends or relatives to suddenly cling to me. I also do not want arguments about who I should give more/less. And most importantly, I want the money to be used in MY way without pressure from family, relatives nor friends. All The Best, Happy Dreaming and Hope All of us DO win the Lottery. :P

Hey, that's right. I would also not let people and especially the media know about my winning the lottery...gotta stay away from those cameras. Someone might try to kidnap me for 5 million dollar ransom. OMG! lol

I would build a library at my friend's school for children with disabilities in Uganda. I would buy an apartment in somewhere I would want to live so I would never have to worry about rent again. I don't want a house because I dont' think I could deal with all the maintenance. I'd rather have someone else do that. I'd buy a wheelchair accessible van and a laptop. Lastly, I'd go to Africa and spend a lot of time there. I'd make many donations including to all the places I haven't donated yet but want to.

I want to live in my middle of a big city. They have apartments not houses. Plus in a house, you are the "super" not for me.

Why wouldn't you want a house? If you won 5 million you could afford to pay for the housekeepers/maids :)

Wow, I've read some interesting responses. Personally, I would set aside $1 million of it for savings. Then a good chunk would go to family members, my church, and some for my friends, lol. I would then probably start my own media company, involving the net, radio, TV, etc. I would probably buy a place near downtown, just because I love downtown Houston so much. Probably the next thing on my list would be to start a clothing line/clothing store, get a better car, probably enjoy a month in Italy, and a week or so in Miami (went once, want to go back!). I would like to have the chance to invest some of the money in numerous things, including foreign currencies, stocks, gold, etc. Oh, and the rest of the money would be kept in a bank account offshores so I can avoid paying taxes on it. ;)

Oh, let me add BTW, that the most I've ever won on a lotto ticket was $50...back in the 1st grade and my dad bought me a lotto ticket. We went to Toys R Us and I bought a blue bike. Good times, lol.

with our current financial situation i always have wishful thinking about winning a lottery. $5 million dollars would wipe out all of our debts and can give us a really good start. I would buy as many louis vuittons as i can possibly manage, a car, and a brand new house. everything! i would just buy everything. well, now that's out, i guess I'd have to wake up to reality once again. while wishing for a big amount of money thru winning of lottery is good and absolutely normal, it is much ambitious than setting the goal of that amount to be achieved thru hard work. I'd better work hard than waste my time thinking about it. anyways, let's try and buy a lotto ticket and see where our luck would take us. hehehe

Figure out a way to make it last a lifetime and just don't work ever again. Read good books and cook good food and relax at home and play games on my PC and watch good movies and go to the beach, have a nice girlfriend and so on - just never work again at all.

Too bad it's not 50 million dollars, I could pay off everybody's mortgages, among other things. But with 5 million, which is probably 2 1/2 million after taxes, I'd pay off all my bills, invest the bulk of the remainder, leave some aside for mad money, stay home with the kids if I thought I could afford to and live off the interest from the investments. Some sharing too...

Hello, i would like to buy a little island, and organize there a community. I guess Freedomland could be a good name for that community. But..... due is just a dream, i wish you will forgive me if i'll go back posting and posting, to try to earn 5 dollars ;) see you

I second pierone's decision. I would buy a small island that I could go to at anytime, 24/7, if something happened, or just as a getaway. Mmmm...one can dream.

If I won, and my heart ever started beating again, I could probably find some good uses for it. I'd make sure money would never be an issue for us again by making some very wise investments. I would donate my home to be used as a Safe House as well as make other charitable donations. Moving to a new location would be a priority. And I'd be generous to those who have been good to me, which isn't a long list.

I would use 1 millon to buy a new house,3 million to invest, and 1 millon to travel with my family and buy some presents for my friends. And well, I never buy a lottery actually, just not like.

I would first pay off the loan on our business-but keep the business and hire! I'd hate to think how much of it would go towards taxes, but after what's left, I'd probably invest some, especially for children's college funds (because they are not living off me their whole life!). I'd also have to do something fun-like go on a looong vacation.
