Why do a lot of old people dress funny?

I think it's beyond me that a lot of old ladies wear really ugly sweaters. No offense to them, but why do they have to wear special old people clothes? Some don't but.. just why?

Haha They are wearing those because they are of a different generation, and to their generation, those clothes looks good. It is just like whatever we feel is fashionable and looks good on us now might not be looked on that favourably by our descendants 50 years down the road. So.. no matter how ugly we think their clothings is, we will just have to give them the respect and accept it as it is. Afterall, who knows whether or not we will be part of the ridicule that our old ladies are having now 50 years down the road. Take care! And happy mylotting!

Lol.. that's the difference between the different people from a different generation and era. But, it is sure interesting to see the difference in the generation's thinking and fashion. Well, take care and happy mylotting!

That's true, actually, because when I see a video in class that's old from the days long past, I wonder to myself why they dress like old people!

Old people have reached the age where they have earned the right to wear whatever they want to wear and not care what others think.

I totally agree with you, bestboy - bravo! I'm 51, and couldn't give a hoot what people think of what I wear or how I look. I think older people are wise enough and confident enough to do as they please without having to worry about peer pressure.

Maybe a lot has to with price. And I find a lot of older people are low on money, because most people when they retire, they are living on a strict budget. Not many people retire very well off. Since clothes don't seem to matter as much to the older generation (including out of date sweaters), they are perfectly happy cutting costs with their wardrobe, to pay other bills. My late grandmother really never changed sizes, so as long as there were no holes in her clothes, she continued to wear what she had worn for many years. She had a very low income and didn't care if her clothes were out of date. And she did have an occasional reindeer sweater for Christmas, but in her defense, one of my aunts bought that. Now my other grandma, who is still living, she cares what she wears. She doesn't have a big budget either, but she does wait for sales. I'd say she is a very fashionable older lady. She is very frugal, and her clothes aren't fancy, but she always look up-to-date and nice. And I've never seen her in an ugly sweater. Ugly shoes, yes. But mostly because her feet hurt. And she cares more about comfort with her feet than style.

I'm very frugal myself, but I'm sure I'll be able to wear disgustingly tight and revealing clothes to make the young'ins squirm, haha.

Comfort. We care about being comfortable and if people think our sweaters are ugly, we don't care. We've tried all our lives to be attractive and worn things that were uncomfortable and now it's time to leave all that behind and enjoy what remains of our lives.

I think it is because they need inexpensive clothes because they are on social security. My grandma wore loud clothes she wanted to be stylish. I like more subtle clothing.

Well, I'm old, and I think it's because some of us just don't place any importance on clothing anymore. I've never particularly liked clothes - I've always preferred to buy exciting things like books - so I don't give a hoot what I wear! Also, a lot of elderly people lived through depressions and wars, and learned to make things last. My grandmother used to unravel old knitted jumpers, wash the wool and re-knit them into something new. It was very hard during the war to get new wool or fabric, so people made the most of what they had. I think those habits still remain today, and older generations are not wasteful.

I agree with you about that they do dress ugly I think maybe they don't know anything about fashion or they don't have the money. cd
