Keeping your budget of $1000 in mind I suggest that you go in for a Sony Vaio. It provides greater RAM to run you heavy applications. Well RAM can be adjusted but if you are looking for a good battery back up I suggest you to buy a Lenovo product. One of its models has a staggering battery backup of about 9 to 10 hours. One problem with your demand is that a powerful laptop would definitely cost a bit more than $1000 so I would suggest raising your budget a bit more.

The best solution is go to the dell website http://dell.com and customize your laptop according to your needs. There you can easily add or remove components according to your choice. And you can side-by-side also see how much it will cost you. Good luck.
