Hi, I dont know if it makes any difference or not. I am one month preg now and will be going for my first appoinment with the doctor next week. I tried to book with one doctor who is also my family doctor, but he is on vacation and I am going to his wife for the time being ie for 2 weeks. Does it make a difference if the gynecologist is male or female. I am wondering if either or other will be more understanding etc??

you will know when the male and any female expose and are opposite each other!! we have known experiences of the females visiting massage parlours and gynaecologists of the male category!! just to mention pl be careful!

Congrats on having a baby! Your decision should be based mainly on how much you trust your gut instinct. I for one, would like a female gynecologist because I feel that her maternal instincts would kick in when I become her patient. I feel that she would be better able to relate to me as a woman also. I also like the fact that women have smaller hands. Hehe. Actually, it would really depend on how you feel towards having a male gynecologist.

Thanks for the advice. I totally agree with that. Were you pregnant anytime. Whom did you go for the checkups to?

I don't know if i'm fit to answer your question, being a man, but i think that isn't a problem of gender. You have to be / feel comfortable and the doctor should be understanding, empathic, sensitive. It's interesting to see responses from women who already gave birth, impressions about their gynecologists.

Thanks for the reply even though you never went through the same. true gender is not the matter. but I was wondering if being a female doctor will we get more personal advices but also if the female gynaecologist will be less sensitive and caring about our situation

i believe gender doesn't really matter. their experience in their profession should count the most. i had a male ob when i was pregnant with my youngest daughter and he was better than my first ob(female, when i was pregnant with my eldest), but i would say that he was better because he was a senior doctor.

I think it's basically a matter of personal preference. Which one makes you feel more comfortable? In the end, I will go with the one who is knowledgeable and who will listen to my concerns.

It depends on you really... depends on what you are comfortable with but if your first choice was a male doctor then whatever it's up to you. Professionally speaking no it doesn't make a difference. I doubt he'd refer his patients to his wife if he thought she didn't know what she was doing lol... So don't worry about it just worry about keeping yourself healthy for the sake of your baby and names =P If you really are concerned you could ask to see her credentials but since she is the wife of your family doctor that might be a bit awkward to say the least... Good luck.

Male or female does not matter, but I was more comfortable with female, but still had to be seen by a male once or twice when my doctor was unavailable.
