How far would you go to get a lost dog back home?

Today I was driving on a pretty busy street & a little Sheltie dog was running aimlessly down this street. I was so scared for the little guy & started following him. There were several others who were trying to help. The dog finally went down a residential street only to come out through another busy street. I caught up to him & rolled my window down to call him ("Here, puppy, puppy!") in the sweetest voice I could muster. I was able to stop in the middle turning lane & try to coax the dog to me. Another person stopped to help. I opened both front doors to my car & he eventually went into the car. He had a collar on & I was able to phone his owner who met me in the parking lot of a local supermarket. He was very appreciative & I made sure that he knew that there were many people trying to help his little dog. I would do just about anything if I see a lost dog, especially if he/she has a collar with tags. I even kept a collie for awhile, never could find his owner. He went to a good home through the collie rescue group I'm involved with. How far would you go to help a lost dog? I was really impressed that so many people pulled over to help this dog. It made me feel better about the human race!

That was so nice of you. My only story is that one night I was coming home it was very dark but I caught a dog in my yard that wasn't mine. I started talking to it and coaxing him toward me when some man pulled up in my drive way jumped out and started screaming at the dog. I felt so bad that the dog had to have such an awful owner. Anyway the dog took off running and I didn't help him because I thought that the dog would be better off in the shelter than with that mean man.

That would be tough to see. I can't stand seeing animals abused in any way. The dog I found seemed to have a nice owner. He didn't even know that the dog had gotten out. He was quite pleased that I found him.

I would do everything you did! And as a collie owner who had a misplaced Collie for a few hours - I thank you and everyone like you who stops to help. I drove in ever widening circles looking for my Tennyson when he and my others got out early one morning. The other 2 made it home but Tennyson does not have a very good GPS in his head. After hours of looking and calling the dog warden every 30 minutes to see if anyone reported him. Finally I called and they said yea we got a cal and the warden just picked this dog up.. He was 3 blocks from my house In a direction I didn't think he would go. but I had looked down that street- only someone had already nabbed him be then and left him at the gas station on the corner because she had to go to work. So I didn't see him because they KNEW he was sombody's dog and they kept him inside until the warden came. I was so greatful to get my boy back and I wish I knw the woman who took time out from her day to grab him and make sure he was safe so I could've thanked her.

It is so frightening to lose your dog! Whenever I can help out I will because I can just imagine what the owner must be going through. I'm glad you found Tennyson. Funny how some dogs know just where to go & others wander for hours. Not sure what my dogs would do if they got out. Hope I never find out!
