Christmas. But since she got sick (4 yrs ago),then eventually passed away (1 yr ago),we missed her fruit cakes very much. For me,that was the only fruit cake I would eat. The rum added was just enough to our taste. The nuts and fruit preserves made the fruit cake soooo delicious. When she started to get sick, but was still able to bake, she did this sugar free fruit cakes as she was diabetic.
It is very unfortunate that I could not bake, but my sister is now trying her best to...I hope she could bake the fruit cake as our mom used to.
I have tried several fruit cakes...the commercial ones.I buy several to check whether the taste will suit our taste buds or not...some are just loaded with too much rum...I do hope we will find one that is close to my moms... How about you?do you like fruit cakes?or they end up given to somebody else as a "recycled"gift as it is always the role of fruit cakes...

that is so sad to hear. didnt anybody atleast kept the recipe? i know no body can ever top what and how your mom bake it but at least there would be the smell of her being around. i dont eat fruit cake too. but one of my friends his keyboard player's mom bakes very delicious fruitcake. i was even so hesitant to take a bite.... but i glad i did. it was very very delicious and now we always order from them fruitcakes for christmas. practise can make your sister hit the jackpot. she may not bake it like your mom for this year but as years goes by she will and she can master it. goodluck

yes,we all have our moms recipees intact...my sister had to bring all hand written recipees in a very big bag all the way to switzerland as her and her husbands office, nestle, sent them there. My sister said, she wouldnt be interrested with our mom's things, even the jewelries as long as she will have all the recipees...you know, she scanned them and saved them all with several back ups...her family is back here now,so we are hoping she would be sending fruit cakes by the mail, just like our mom did...I have our mom's jewelries and many other things...but I could not bake...I would have prefered the baking too...tnx so much for responding.
I am still scouting for an alternative though, my sister isnt learning fast enough...

It's sad to hear that your mom has passed away. Well, I do like fruit cakes, but I have only tried those commercial ones. I don't know how to bake cakes, and my mum doesn't bake cakes either. Hope your sister is able to bake the cake your mom used to, and have a nice Christmas.

I loved my Mom's fruitcake also. She has been gone a few years now but had not made it for several years. I am still a little puzzled on weather my Mom used Brandy or Rum in her cake. She would wrap it in cheesecloth and keep it soaked with the brandy or rum for several weeks. Than near the end, just before eating, she would make a brandy/rum glaze and drizzle that on top. This would make the green and red cherry decorations on top glisten. It was the best fruitcake and everyone loved it. I have thought about making it many times, but there is only 1 person near me that actually likes it, so it is really not worth making it. I do a lot of baking during the holidays and give goodie bags to many friends and family members just as my Mom did for years. Maybe someday I will try to duplicate her famous fruitcake. Have a great holiday!

Sorry on hearing the sad news of your mum.
I am a fruit cake lover. The best fruit cake that I ever eaten is baked by my mum too. My mum used to bake a lot of cakes for us to eat when I was young. One of her favorite is the cream fruit cake. I could eat half of the cake because it is so delicious! I think I am the fattest during that period because I always have cake to eat.
Since I am growing older now and I am staying miles away from my mother, I rarely have chance to taste the fruit cake anymore. My mother no longer bake so much as there are less people in the house now and her fan (me) is no longer there. I miss the fruit cake and I am thinking to get one later from the bakery. Hope it taste like what my mother made.
